Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Right well sorry I only said racism since that's what you seemed to want to call it! Sectarianism is what you were looking for,and that's there between both clubs! If you try to deny that everyone may as well stop posting in response to you!!!

Deny what? Yes there are elements of the Celtic support who dislike Prods.

But to say Celtic as a club are sectarian or racist is utterly incorrect and shows fundamental ignorance of Scottish football culture.

Oh god, the idiocy. Why should anyone be expected to care about the whole Celtic/Rangers feud? The majority of posters here aren't Scottish, I'd wager alot here aren't practicing Catholics (I know I wouldn't believe in a religion if you paid me). The side just made it to the UEFA Cup Final against a side who would have been tipped to beat them and deserve congratulations just as much as Zenit Petersburg, who were absolutely astounding today I might add.

I never said there wasn't racism in Ireland. I've been to matches at Lansdowne and been annoyed to hear the SF/IRA crap. I just object to the idea that Rangers FC should be held up as a pinnacle of virtue when it is clearly anything but.

Dude, i have never once....anbd will never hold Rangers fans up as the pinnacle of virtue.
I do however defend our right to defend ourselves....i think thats all thats happening on this thread.

but you arent getting off that hook so easily.

hook? wat hook? wat the hell are u talking about. posting on here like ur some sort of football fan prophet here to tell the rights and wrongs of certain clubs and the ppl that support them.

its more like, u dont like rangers so then bring up everything bad about their history on a night were they have just played and won one of the biggest games in their history and u just want to try and cr*p on it in the most petty way possible. u have absolutely no principles to speak of and because of fans and old policies of the club u feel u have the right to say to everyone here to hate them.

and yeah, its pretty easy to talk about rangers and not bring religion into it. ppl have been doing it all night... why cant you? and dont tell me its cos you are some sort of beacon of righteousness, cos we both know otherwise dont we?

A welcome and refreshing policy in a globalised football environment.

Selecting only locals to play for them and being almost exclusively reliant on home produced talent and never having been relegated from the Spanish top flight. A marvellous story. The rule does not apply to employees of the club, only the playing staff.

Thank you Eirebear, I was just about to ask the same question.

I know a man who waxes lyrical about all things nationalistic/ republican and his respect for Atletico Bilbao

He was very short of words when I suggested to him they were the same as Rangers were prior to 1989 in their player selection policy.

Firstly, this reply is not an attempt to 'try harder' as OhNoYouDidn't has requested, it is merely a valid reply.

Rangers excluded players based on their background (i.e. religion) and Atletico Bilbao exclude players based on their background (i.e non Basque)

    Looks pretty similar to me.

okay so questions were asked and u answered them.

but um, tell me wat hook ur not letting Eirebear off from? the he supports rangers? and their club have a history and not all of it is nice? cos like, no other clubs in the world have a coloured history....

AMAZINGLY ppl nowadays can see beyond religion / nationalism and support a club who play a sport. i dont think "wat has this team done for/against ireland in the past 100 years or so?" do u know why? cos id be a right sad act if i did. it may sound cliché to say this... but get over it ffs

No, Rangers had a negative discrimination policy, no catholics, Athletic have a positive one, only locals.

Are you seriously going to say having a policy of local players being preferred is in any, way, shape or form the same as refusing to sign players on the basis of their skin colour or religion?

Its standard practice in underage football to have a geographic limit.

It's exactly the same, Atletico Bilbao are saying, No non Basque Spaniards, No Africans, No Asians, No Eastern Europeans, No English, No Scots, No Irish, No Dogs.

Looks like a negative discrimination policy if you ask me.

I disagree, every clubs youth academy is based on kids being local, so the precedent is there.

Excluding people on the basis of religion is far more sinister than having a locals only policy.

Ah Dick Advocaat, the man who paid £12m for Tore Andre Flo

wasnt Ricksen linked with Glamour Model Jordan whilst at Rangers?

went on Wiki to check on Zenit and one word struck me instantly: Gazprom, as in funded by. there is no mystery why they are in the UEFA Cup final, its all about the money:

Well, were underdogs again for the final, as we have been in the whole tournament, lets not forget many people thought we would struggle to get even a POINT in the CL group.

Can we do it once more?
I dont know, but its gonna be fun finding out!

City have been linked with Andrei Arshavin lately. Apparently he's a top class winger/forward. I've seen the captain, Anatoliy Tymoshchuk, play before and he's good player. Gonna be a tough game.

Congratulations to Rangers for getting through to the Uefa Cup final. Their best success in Europe since 1972 I understand. Rangers played well I thought, at least in terms of defence/middle of the park and getting the ball out of the danger area. But they only made a few half chances in the match and Darcheville was up on his own a lot. Ferguson was involved in a good move and something like that could get them a goal in the final if they set themselves up in a similar formation. I had a feeling beforehand that Vieri would miss his penalty, as his body language is all wrong. He is far from match sharp fluffing a chance from 2 yards out.

Zenit St Petersburg are no flash in the pan, have good players technically and have a lot of scalps this season. One player though will miss the final. Arshavin, potentially the worst name to have in marketing terms (unless Gillete??) will be back however. They were well worth their win against Bayern. I think Kahn is well past his best before date. Zenit will provide tough opposition in the final for Rangers, but anything is possible in a final.

From a Celtic point of view, Rangers participation in that final will keep their focus split and should enhance the chances of Rangers dropping points in their league matches.

The what if ..... if Rangers draw two, or draw one and lose one, and win their other 4 league matches, and if Celtic win their 3 matches, Celtic will win the league. That scenario is far form beyond the realms of possibility.

But hats off to Rangers for getting to the final.

The SH1TE some people go on! What reason do you have to be against Rangers tonight!

This Celtic boll*x that people go on with is just plain stupid and immature!

    1) The fact that my parents returned home from a trip to Florence last night after being taunted with chants of Fenian bastards fro having a drank outside an irish bar.

2)The fact that I love the game of football and what they did last night was a disgrace to the game imo.

3)The fact that three of the clubs fans beat an elderly supporter of a rival club to death last weekend.

4)the fact that I could not go into the clubs stadium without fear of being abused because of my nationality.

Im not a celtic fan, Im a Spurs fan and I watch very little Scottish football. The fact that people feel some need to congratulate rangers even though they dont really feel that way is what is immature to me.

I've no idea what you're talking about. I don't care all that much that Rangers got to the final. Nor do I care about Tottenham making the League Cup Final. But it is nice to acknowledge achievements that aren't exactly expected. And lets face it, if it was everyone praising Zenit yesterday, no1 would care that much.

No, the debate has partially moved on to why Rangers are disliked in Ireland and Scotland and in particular why some posters are cheering for them.

No football thread is ever going to be unique to matters just on the pitch. Why are Rangers a sacred cow?

Its his choice to not want to see political rubbish in a football forum. Obviously he knows his opinion isn't binding, and it didn't appear to come across that he was trying to make it so. But this is a forum about football. There are forums about many other things. If people want to have political and religious debates I'm aware there are plenty of forums on boards.ie that would definitely facilitate that.

Now, I don't know about you. But Xavi comes onto the football forum to talk about football, and so do I. A thread about the UEFA Cup semi-finals is not a thread about sectarianism and why people do or don't hate Rangers/Celtic or any other team out there, and in my opinion shouldn't be treated as such.

Hold on, the Moscow as a venue thread is entirely about potential trouble. The CL final 07 thread discussed in depth the Liverpool fans antics. But we can't discuss Rangers as a club and their fans because that is 'sectarian' (and I have seen no sectarian comments from anyone on this thread). The subtext of 'rangers bashing' derived from people asking why there was support from posters for Rangers, which in turn derived from the 'anti-football' discussion.

Politics is a part of football, whether it be international footie or derby games. That is life. On boards.ie, Rangers will get a hard time. That is also life.

Why are Rangers, and their fans antics on the way to the UEFA cup final, such sacred cows?
