Well I played the 14 day free trial last summer and I found the game to be great but very very confusing.

I've been reading up on it again and the politics of this game are mouth watering with the current situation with Bob and Goons etc.

When I did the trial a guy in the game cafe gave me 50000isk and got me to buy a ship and some upgrades. And I did some missions but everytime I did them I was sent to another system and did the exact same two missions and being sent to another system as the last which got quite repedative.

So basically I want to start again playing soon but I dont know really what to do:confused:

Mining/Missioning/Whatever arent EVE gameplay. They are means to make ISK to pay for EVE gameplay which is PvP. Ratting is probably the "best" method as it draws upon basically the same set of skills youll need to PvP in terms of tank, gank, speed etc etc.

No corp worth a damn will hire a 14 day trial player unfortunately, so youre on your own for that initial period. First place you should knock on doors is a empire war dec corp or a merc corp. Empire war dec corps preferred, though merc corps are at least PvP orientated so should have a few guys who doing roaming and **** in between the station camps. I havent tried SHCs Red vs Blue war dec corps, but apparently theres a lot of very experienced PvPers who have alts in there. If you ask nicely, one might have an ego large enough that you use to steal all his PvP thoughts. Or they might tell you to go get ****ed, but never hurts to ask. Right?

You will want to get into a frigate with a MWD, Warp scrambler, Web and basic weapon skills - Punisher, Rifter, Griffin/Kestrel and Tristan/Imicus are all decent T1 frigates. Griffin is more a gang support frigate, but its very useful in those gangs as everyone brings DPS and points and no one brings EWAR.

Once you have the basic skills to fly or fit the ship, then concentrate on your learning skills. Its about a months effort, but once you have the Rank 1 learning skills up to 5 you will be learning much faster. The Advanced learning skills are pricey for a new player, but you should aim to get them as soon as you can. There is an optimal order in which to train learning skills, check on the EVE-O forums, the character or skills subforum stickies.

Implants...yeah, if you can afford them get them asap, but I doubt you will be able to unfortunately for a couple of months. You can lose them if you get podded, but if youre in empire/lowsec its fairly easy to get the pod out - just select a celestial, it appears in the selected item box, and keep spamming warp. The PC will lag, but the pod should warp out. You can also set a distant gate as a waypoint and turn on autopilot as youre going down, but the first method works for me.

Speaking of skills you will want to get EVE-Mon to plan your skill training, and probably Eve Fitting Tool as well so youve an idea of what you can do with a ship without forking out ISK you dont have on modules you cant use.

What particular race you want to fly will depend on what you want to do - using very broad, inaccurate generalisations Caldari are EWAR gang support/fleet snipers, Amarr are basically heavy tanking BS damage dealing SoBs, Gallente are close up in your face gank, and Minmatar are fast moving, hit and run guerrilla types.

If you are re-rolling a character it doesnt matter really what race you pick as you can train any ship. If you are min-maxing you will want to go with Caldari Achura and put your points into Perception and Intelligence highest, Willpower and Perception slightly below and Charisma as low as you can get it[ I.E. Per 12, Int 12, Willpower 9, Memory 9, Charisma 3 for example] - Charisma isnt worth a single point tbh unless your character is totally specced for leadership skills, and even then its not worth it.

If youre not min-maxing, dont worry - Achura characters are uniformly malformed looking monstrosities.

Nano-faggery is small gang PvP end game for EVE and Minmatar are probably the most easily nano-fagged. If you are going nano-faggery in the longterm, you will want to train up shield skills, navigation skills, & weapon skills.

If you are Caldari you could aim at going for an EWAR support role - Griffins, Blackbirds, Falcons/Rooks. Youll die a lot as people hate Caldari Ewar but thats because its powerful.

If you want to concentrate on fleet fights, probably the best place to start is training for an interceptor, then an interdictor, with T2 small weapons. With that skill set you will be able to roam, assist a fleet by killing enemy tacklers, and with the interdictor help bubble and kill enemy fleets.

If you like gang support, but dont want to go Caldari, you could train up leadership skills, and fly a Battlecruiser/Command Ship with a mindlink and pass bonuses to your gangmates. For Empire PvP, the Minmatar Skirmish Warfare skills are probably the best because they help your gang move faster, tackle enemy targets better and/or reduce damage from larger ships.

The thing to do is not to jump too far ahead into a ship youre not skilled up for or cant afford to lose. Get T2 small weapons trained up, then move on to T2 mediums. Going for T2 larges is a big chunk of the skill plan, so I wouldnt advise it too soon - specialise in the small ships, the cruisers. Getting Cruiser 5 is a massive skill as well - it makes all the T1 cruisers that more effective and it is a required skill for so many T2 cruisers - recons, heavy dictors, logistics, HACs, Command Ships etc etc.

What I would say is plan - read as much as you can about roles and ships and see what appeals, and use EVE mon to plan your skills towards that. Younger characters can stand up to older ones if they spec - if you try to be a jack of all trades, youll find it a good deal harder.

What ship type does each race start off with?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 328 ✭✭Statso

You start in a noobship, amarr has impairor, minmatar have reapers, i forget what gallente have which is bad cos i am gallente and caldari have the majorly overpowered ibis.

Doesn't matter, you should be moving on from that within twenty minutes. Two minutes if you come to the Irish channel and go "I want iskies I'm new gimme gimme".

    What class

The ships are actually called rookie ships, but majority refer to them as noobships, you get one every time you dock in a station in your capsule (pod) and have no other ships available there.

Is it time to whip out ye olde "EVE learning curve/cliff" joke?

Oh and TL;DR.....Train Minmatar to Cruiser/BC level, switch to Amarr for BS and Caps. Everyone wishes they did.

Haven't actually seen the CEO in game in awhile, really its best to find a corp thats recruiting when your ready to join one, some have strict requirements others will accept anyone, like NESW
