It's been discussed at lenght on this forum, do a search.

The gist of it is that pre 08 imports will be vrt'd on the new system and taxed on the old (cc). 08 upwards cars will be vrt'd and taxed on the new CO2 rates.

Ah I see. I always a bit confused about the whole system. So say for example I import a '88 Ford Sierra 2.0L after July, while i'll be raped for the VRT, it still will be taxed as a 2 litre, and not on CO2 grounds? (which there would be no figures for on a car that old anyway)

Yes. Although really it'd make little difference on a car that old, from 30% to 36% on a car with a very low OMSP anyway.

Yeah, the vrt on that should come to €315. Thats the current minimum charge.

    See http://www.revenue.ie/leaflets/vrt-new-tax-regime.htm

Note minimum VRT charges from July. Highest minimum will be €720!
