Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi,
Just a quick question, that perhaps primary teachers on here could help me with.
Qualifying from Mary I this May all going well, which would mean that I have the lovely task of trying to find a job for September.
However, when it comes to referees on my CV-who should I put down?
A college lecturer? My 5 week home TP teacher? The principle of my 5 week home TP? Any other options?

    Any suggestions/help much appreciated!
    :)

Ive been told current employer if you have one and a lecturer. Not so sure about the principal or teacher as they may not want to be called during the summer holidays and the principal will have enough work on their plate.

Definitely put down principals & teachers on T.P. who saw you teach & can tell first hand how you managed a class.

As contact will be made during summer they're not much use to you unless the teachers / principals are willing to supply mobile / home number to enable contact.

You will have no problem getting a job (tempoary) or after last week in July ( or when panel clears) if looking for permanent - huge shortage of teachers in south

South as Republic of Ireland or south as in munster?
If its south as in munster I heard it's hard to get a job..that all the jobs are in Dublin/surrounding counties.

Ok..still don't know what referees I could use..which would ye from the following..

    Lecturers:
1)Visual arts education lecturer: She was also co-ordinator of a three week teaching African trip which myself and 9 other college students went on as part of our alternative education experience.
2)My curriculum specialisation lecturer: She knows me by name and face as there only 25 of us in the class.
3)One of my German lecturers (I do German as my Arts subject) She's the nicest of them all.

    Principals:
1)My 5 week home TP principal: I went to that primary school myself and she also taught me when I was in senior infants.
2)A neighbouring parish principal where I go subbing on occasion: She's my mothers friend/sisters godmother.

    Teacher:
My five week home TP teacher.

Put down two people who have seen you teach.

Well that would leave my 5 wk home TP teacher and my lecturer who was in Africa with me..

Right: next question..My 5wk home TP teacher will have no problems going as a referee, however is it usual for students to ask a lecturer as a referee, are they likely to decline?

We had a career's seminar last week in college and were advised that academic referees (lecturers) are rarely contacted, but if you are stuck that you should put one down that you know.

As for lecturers saying no to being a referee, there should be no problem if they feel they know you enough.

+1. And also a parist priest etc who knows you for character reference if you can't get 2 of the above. I know I am opening up a whole can of worms here and possibly flood of replies but its as good a referee as anyone else.

    A priest..interesting.
Like I go to mass most weekends, but I'd be surprised if my parish priests knew me personally/my character. They know my parents alright and so they know I come from a very respectable family but that's hardly enough!:D

Relax about applying for jobs. There are plenty of jobs up for grabs towards the end of August. I spent all last summer applying, and only got a job last week of August. Schools are picky and choosy in June and often have someone already lined up. It's all about who you know sadly. I had my 5weeks TP principal down, and my old primary school principal as he lives near me. A priest is always a good one too though. DO NOT STRESS ABOUT GETTING A JOB! As far as I know also, it is quite tough getting a job in Munster as the jobs in Kerry/Cork don't seem to be advertised to the extent of other areas. I'm from Galway and I ended up getting a job in Meath. There were a lot of jobs advertised last summer I remember in Meath/Dublin/Wexford/Wicklow/Waterford. I know others were lucky enough to get a job at home, but quite glad I didn't.Would probably prefer to be a bit nearer home, but it turned out quite well. Good luck anyhow. Try not to worry, as i said, lots of jobs to be advertised in August :)

Oh Im not worried at all! Sur I can't apply for anywhere advertised at the moment as my college havn't sent out my teaching practice grades etc. Yeah i know there's loads of jobs up the country alright, which I have no problem moving to, don't really want to stay at home, im young so Irelands my oyster and what not!:D

Indeed! I didn't know anyone when I moved up this side of the country. Ended up living with 2 random strangers and the 3 of us get on fantastically! All teachers but it helps having someone to complain to!

Quick Question: Been having a look at jobs on paper/internet and naturally some of the schools patronage are Church of Ireland. Can I apply for these jobs even though Im a Catholic? Or what's the story?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 253 ✭✭Special K

Yes you can, you just won't be required to teach religion as such. As far as I know anyhow. Lots of jobs advertised on educationposts.ie. I think I got my job on the internet.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,619 ✭✭✭Fast_Mover

Yeah, that's where I'v been seeing jobs on.
When you send your CV to Church of Ireland schools do you put down your Catholic so they are aware or surprise them with it when you get the job?!!:D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 253 ✭✭Special K

Ha ha not sure. You don't have to put your nationality down on your CV anyhow do you? they'll probably assume that you are Catholic. I doubt it will bother them. It's not like you're going to try and impose your views on them! Funnily enough I never applied for any COI schools. Always stuck with the run of the mill Catholic school!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,619 ✭✭✭Fast_Mover

I suppose that they'll see I attended Mary I and so thats obvious enough that I'm Catholic.
No doubt I'll be back on here asking more CV related questions and then after that interview tips/hints etc!

I got anything I needed to know off educationposts. Don't know if many teachers and the likes use this forum. Lots of interview questions repeat themselves. You'll have the joys of the dip in front of you. As do I at the minute. Ask me at the end of June and I may be properly qualified then!!
