Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back a page or two to re-sync the thread and this will then show latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi all
I need some help setting up a home network.
The main pc is connected to a dlink voip router
this pc is running win xp,

I have a server (Dell Poweredge SC440) running ubutnu server, also connected to the router.

I can log on to the server but cant go any further, as i dont know any commands for the cmd prompt,
    ifconfig

i have tried running ubutnu desktop and can get on the internet using the server, but cant see the main pc.
    (hope this is making sence)

have run networking wiz on xp machine to no avail.
(ipconfig/all does not show up the server ip address)

    any pionters will be welcome.

i dont realy want to go down the route of buying msho.

the server is for storing all media files and backup of docs,

as far as i know it is. when installing there was a prompt to install it.
as i said i do not have a gui for it as its running the sever edition.
is there a way to check ?
or should i just install the desktop version?

If you've no desktop manager/X installed on Ubuntu then you need to edit /etc/samba/smb.conf (commonly) to set up the samba shares.

    /etc/samba/smb.conf didnt work :o

    did apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
so now its downloading from the internet (2 effin hours) will be back when its done.

Show us the smb.conf you've edited. What happened when you started the smb service? What runlevel did you add it to if any?

These should explain in a Ubuntu specific way.
