Kula Shaker. Thought they were going to be huge, I was only about 15, but I thought they really had something. Just proves, you wont make it big with a name like Crispian:)

Marion - best of the second-league Britpop bands:

Cheers those Melatons tunes. Brings back some memories alright!

Thought of another band there - Mansun. They looked like they had it for a while.

    LOL @ Mansun

Agree with Kerbdog. They could and should have been massive, in the states particularily.

Anyone ever hear of The Last Post - dubliner Alan Kelly - released two great albums in the early 00s... and nothing since.

Ah man, i got Mansun's Six for my brother one birthday. Now, not hearing it in 10 years i may be doing it an injustice, but what a horrible mess of an album.

    Moving on...

While im listening to them, Teenage Fanclub's lack of crossover to world wide domination has always puzzled. They are amazing when you think about it. Go on, think about it.

And Buffalo Tom. Another band that seem incapable of writing a band song. never thought id get to sing Larry with them. But i did, last week in Tripod. Brilliant band/gig.

I wouldn't include the Strokes. Sure Room on Fire and First Impressions of Earth were bad, but at least the latter had the fantasic Juicebox, which was an indicater they have something left in them.

The Vines would have been a band I'd put in this catagory, but their last album[ Vision Valley] also suggested their still a force to be deal't with[ althoguh the lead singers mental/personal problems/illness means they will most likely never be the big band they should be.

Room On Fire is a classic and I also strongly feel that the first half of FIOE stands up to any of their work prior to its release. Had they removed the last few tunes I'd call it a modern triumph.

QFT. I think it suffers because it sounds too similar and came out too soon after their first album. A few swing and miss songs on First Impressions but mostly good ones.

Mansun's Six album is class, just takes a bit of getting used to.

I love finding old copies of Hotpress, Q, NME, etc etc with "The Next Big Thing" in them, then realising how full of **** these journo's are....anyhoo thats for another day!!!!

    JJ72..what happened there?!?
Although I listened to the first album the other day, and I couldn't get over the bang of "transition year poetry" of it!!!
Then again Mark was probably in transition year when he wrote, so no faulting there.........

I've only heard the one tune from his new super group, not baaaaaaad i spoooose, but.....
...when I heard they were called Concerto for Constantine, i couldn't help thinking that was the name Mark scribbled over on his cover of Soundings before he decided to go with JJ72.
Best of luck to them though, we need credible Irish RAAAAAWWWWK, so fingers crossed this works.

An ex bought me a Last Post album once. I think I'd heard some stuff and thought he was ok but the album just put me to sleep.

Mansun's Six is my favourite album EVER, absolute genius!!!

Their 3rd album Little Kix was awful, although it did contain a cracking single in 'I Can Only Disappoint U'

Other bands to add to the list

King Adora (Really good first album, proper glam rock)
    Kinesis

You sir are a man after my own heart. Probably in my top 5 albums ever. Every song is just excellent.

supposedly still working on a follow up - must be nearly 10 years now.

Death from Above 1979 should certainly have recorded a follow up

I was thinking the same. Both the Heads Up EP and the album are great. MSTRKRFT are pretty cool though, and Seb is recording as well, I think I have some demos of his somewhere. It's a real shame they're not working together though as they did make a good team.

This Et Al from Leeds also called it quits last week, shame as their album was well worth a listen. Have to admit the headline on the email the band sent to DiS was glorious - "Sick Of Et Al" :D

Have to agree with those posting Melaton,

i loved this band, only saw them once in Whelans, it may well have been their last gig, have all the ep's they released, quality tunes,

as far as i know the singer Luke Slott is living stateside now, he is releasing an album by himself, but it is solo piano stuff.

Antone else remember an Irish band called Sonora? relentless was a great tune

Six - the ultimate Marmite album. Personally, there's some bits I love on it and some bits I hate, even within the one track. The title track is about eight minutes long, the first couple of minutes and last couple of minutes are great but the middle section - AGHH MY EARS!!

Anyway, have to mention Whipping Boy. Heartworm is one of my favourite albums and one which I go back to every once in a while. Reminds me, I must give it a listen again soon. It all went wrong after that though.

Moneypenny. One album, then called it quits.

Nine Black Alps. Their first album had some cracking songs on it. Some great riffs. The second album is an awful pop album

I remember seeing them play the Roisin Dubh a good few years back and I thought they were excellent. Plus the girl on guitar (or was it bass?) was easy on the auld eyes so that didn't hurt.

I wouldn't really include Teenage Fanclub in this category as they promised so much- and delivered. They may not have achieved worldwide fame, but the music remains of a high quality.

I'd definitely pick the Vines, really loved Highly Evolved but I never heard anything about them after that...

I also really enjoyed Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's first record, but now I cringe at the thought.

RIDE broke up way too early :(

They were my favourite band during my teen years, and I always thought 'Power of Dreams' should have gone further. In fact there were a whole load of decent Irish bands which appeared in the very early 90's who all should be still around playing and earning oodles of dosh.

The Doves should be bigger than they are, I think they could be this year's elbow

Real disapointment- At the Drive In breaking up, and everything TRAVIS did after their great first album.

happiness from amanda palmer and what the divine comedy turned into

I did, The last laugh of laughter, slide show, and blue flashing lights were good tracks, but didnt do the same as good feeling or tied to the 90's for me, and i tend to listen to the first album start to finish- always a sign of a keeper to my top album list

All sidelined for various reasons in mid flow, but maybe it was better that way.

My Bloody Valentine - Ahh, but Im pretty possitive they'll realise something as decent as Loveless. Hopefully.

    Just wondering,

I can listen to both start to finish, nothing after that start to finish though
