Comp Sci in UCD

    I realise this is MAD vague but seeing as there seems to be a few CS students here, what is your opinion of the faculty etc in UCD?

    I'm thinking of doing the H.Dip.Comp.Sci. next year and trying to get as much info as possible on it.

    I'm doing the H.Dip this year... its quite a good course if a little intense sometimes. Primarily because you take courses from 1st, 2nd and 3rd year as well as completing a major project so all the deadlines can pile up on you at once.

    However the staff are all very friendly and supportive. The faculty is great at organising extra tutorials and help sessions for the students coming up to exam time. There is also great communication from the student advisers and other staff members.

    What kind of background did you come from? What are the opportunities afterwards like?

    Intensity I don't mind at all if the course is something I engage with, which I think I will. I've had a bit of trouble with course I'm doing this year in that I find it quite boring and most of the subject matter irrelevant; I don't feel I'm learning anything useful (Masters in Management). Is alot of the course practical and applicable?

    I did an arts degree first, but I knew I had an interest in the course because I did a year of science and took comp sci and it was the only part I enjoyed. It has been far more intense than doing my arts finals.

    As for opportunities afterwards.. well my class is very small and I know at least 4 people secured quite good jobs by march. The course is only a year long but they try to give you a broad education on most areas in computer science...theres alot in there hence why it can be quite intense! There is alot of programming but also we took courses in Artificial Intelligence, Operating Systems, Networks and Information Systems, Computer Architecture, Web Technologies and Program Construction (which is kind of logic/math based.. only course which went straight over my head!). Then the final project is worth 3 modules and you spend the second semester working on that along with your other modules. This year we had to develop an e-commerce application. Sounds easy enough in principle but as I found it was actually quite a huge task!

    You can go into almost any industry with this course.. every company has some sort of IT/ Technology department, for example you could go into the banking industry if you wish.

    You can get a good job and apply the skills youve learnt to it or you can go on as some people do and do a masters and then specialise in a specific area.

    There is alot of continuous assesment in this course too... a big change from Arts but I wasn't in the horizons system then. I find it quite handy to know I have the bulk of the work out of the way come exam time!
