Tune into Phantom 105.2 this Monday for ‘The Last Rewind' (Mon 11am-12noon), an aural tribute to the rise and fall of the cassette tape as it lingers on the brink of extinction. Fiona Scally exposes the vivid memories and fond nostalgia associated with cassettes, nostalgia which is rarely expressed in relation to modern day music formats.

When UK electrical retailer Curry's announced last year that they would no longer be stocking cassette tapes due to a significant demise in sales, it seemed that the much-loved format was well and truly on its last legs. In an age where music can be downloaded, played, replaced and deleted at the touch of a button, ‘The Last Rewind' focuses on the cultural significance of the cassette tape and its importance for several generations of music lovers the world over.

The Last Rewind will offer a trip down memory lane, and that the reminiscences of contributors will spark fond memories within listeners themselves. The other aim is to impress on the MP3 generaton that although the cassette is a dead format and is often viewed as kitsch at best, it was in reality an extremely revolutionary and important music format.

The programme covers a range of topics including the dawn of the walkman, the bootlegging culture in 1980s Dublin, mixtapes, the role of cassettes in hip hop, and the justification or otherwise of the cassette-related nostalgia. It makes use of original bootleg recordings and audio taken from contributors' personal childhood mixtapes.

Contributors include music journalists Sinead Gleeson and Jim Carroll, Dave Kennedy, owner of Road Records, Phantom 105.2 presenters Edel Coffey, Peter Vamos and John Caddell, and Angela Dorgan, co-organiser of the Hard Working Class Heroes festival.

Compiled and produced by Phantom 105.2 presenter and producer Fiona Scally and funded by the BCI Sound and Vision Scheme.

Phantom 105.2 is available in Dublin on 105.2, nationwide on NTL/Chorus Digital TV Channel 935 and online at www.phantom.ie
