Ok i havent played a whole lot of GTA IV but first inpressions were bad

No countryside is a big thing but you can almost ignore that, its the little things like the driving and the police chases that seem to be lacking somewhat compared to the last gta.

i dont know why they bothered changing the driving, it was perfect in the last game. this whole idea of more realism has made the game worse than it should be. when you're speeding along and need to jump out of the car, you want to do it quickly not wait half the bloody day till he opens the door and when you're being chased by the police and you need a car. by the time you've broke the window, opened the door, wired the car, start the car(which can take a while sometimes), you're well caught especially if you have 3 or 4 stars after you.

the lack of planes takes a lot of fun out of the game, i miss in san andreas flying over the next island with 4 star police chasing after you, now that was fun. Nikos movement is really annoying. why do you have to hold A to make him run, why didnt they have it so if you moved the anologue stick the whole way, he'll run and just a bit of the way he'll walk. but you can get used to that

    Thats just my thoughts

I think your wrong.... Its the way it was going.... GTA has been changing ever since the first one.... so why stop it now? Thats the only thing GTA SA was missing.... realism :)

I dont see the point in realism, i mean its gta, its famous for being unrealistic and it did them grand before so why change it. i suppose i can excuse the lack of countryside, i mean they did have to have different from SA but why so different

I agree. The countryside was great and all but there was very little to do there. Who knows, they might do something like that agin in the future but there's nothing wrong with liberty city.

The countryside? worst part of any GTA imo. So dull and nothing to do

dont get me wrong its a brilliant game and its not the lack of countryside that makes me think its worse, its the realism. i mean did they have to make it so much more realistic. if you were a casual gamer who wanted to rent this game then they'd be no point because until you really get used to it you wont find it fun

no one in their right mind is going to rent this game tbh.

the hype over it makes people buy it on a whim.

Then people would whinge that it's too cartoony and that it could have been more realistic and better. It's impossible to please everyone. Especially with a game like GTA. I think it's a step in the right direction. I'm more annoyed by the loading and freezing problems tbh.

I don't think making the game more realistic is a problem. They didn't make the driving more realistic however, they just made it harder.
The cornering and stopping distance of ALL the cars especially the good ones is terrible and not even terrible in a realistic way, it's terrible in an unrealistic way. Gran Turismo was hard but realistic, GTA IV is hard and unrealistic and REALLY annoying IMO!

completely aggree there, the driving is very bad. its hard to get from one place to another without crashing or skiding off the road. whats with the brakes, the normal ones dont do anything and the handbrake does too much but its probably something that you can get used to

    The bikes are even worse!

I was never mad on the countryside in san an tbh. I found the san an map to be a little too big, getting places was such a trek sometimes, something the gps and taxis in gta4 have helped with a lot.

Don't get me wrong, san andreas was and is brilliant and all but i think i always preferred vice city for the story, radio, and just the whole game in general even with all the new stuff san an brought to the series. heres hoping for a vice city 2 :)

They had to change the formula, its been the same since GTA3 with new parts stuck on top of that for each game.

The driving is harder definitely heads alot more toward realism than the previous games, it takes a while to get used to but is so much more satisfying.

I thought San Andreas was very poor. I played it a few times then left it in my press to gather dust. I think this game is a dramatic improvement. I agree the handling is a bit dodgy but surely in time people will become acccustomed to it.

Forget the planes i miss the jetpack, you could hover over the police and they would fire off random shots but never up. Made me feel very james bond....good times

Its no vice city ....... sadly !
also i always turn off the radio in this game
which is a first its just like bleh

What were you expecting an expansion pack for San Andreas?

I was expecting the general play to have changed even more radically than it has. Its a fine line between challenging extisting fans and not making the game so specialised that it becomes too hard for new players.

I like the way the driving is harder, power sliding round corners with just the right amount of handbrake, opposite lock and throttle is a buzz when you get it right especially if the car is about to blow and you've half the LCPD after you!:D

Vice city was terrible imo, It looked really cartoony and the graphics were quite poor, san andreas was incredible, the missions and storyline were class, cant wait to buy the new one looks deadly.

I wasn't mad on San Andreas. It was definitely good but I much preferred Vice City.

Have only briefly played IV and it looks pretty damn good so far although need to play it more first. Driving is a bit harder alright but not anything that you can't adapt too with practice IMO.

The progression from GTA II to GTA III was one of improving realism and increasing immersion: going from a top down view to being at eye level with the action.

It's logical for the game to become yet more realistic when making the jump to a next-gen console.

The lighting effects (fog, drizzle, lens flare etc.), new ragdoll physics and punishing driving-controls make this the best in the series for me.

This thing of people saying "oh where's the huge open areas with nothing to do except blow up your car and spend twenty minutes running to find a road with traffic on it- because that's what made SA a great game" is ridiculous.

And, if Rockstar North had decided to make a next-gen GTA game to please "the casual gamer browsing Xtravision, Charbusters and the world-wide equivalents", the actual gaming community would be ****ed because we'd be playing Outrun 360 but with drive-bys and hand-jobs from the blonde girl...

Phew.... needed to get that out there- think I need to sit down for a minute.

Definitely. I didn't like San Andreas at all tbh, I just didn't think it was that much fun, definitely enjoying this more.

GTA IV is the most fun I've had gaming in years. I can't remember the last time I got so engrossed in a game. Everything about it rocks - the humour, the environment, Niko, the complete and utter awesomeness that physics and ragdolls brings to the GTA world!

I agree that a bit of countryside would be nice but san andreas, as much as i liked it, suffered from too much countryside. Get stranded in a desert after your car blows up and you are running for ages.

I dont think the new driving is "realistic" but i do like it. Its nice to see that cars really have different abilities other than the previous games where it was simple a case of they went at different speeds and had different acceleration times. I always find it pointless in games when you simply just have to drive at top speed handbrake and accelerate with minimum effort despite the car. takes the fun out of it.

I cant say i miss planes as much as the OP, lets be honest here, it got boring as hell after a while in SA. I have always missed the dodo though!
