Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

just bought a new landcruiser commercial, my insurance company tells me i can insure it commerical or private.. similar prices except if i insure it private then i get to keep me no claims bonus...

question is if i insure it privately do i have to tax it privately also?

also with a commercial 4x4 can you tax it for first time on the web?

    cheers

You can tax it commercially if you have it insured privately, it makes no difference what way you have it insured, its a commercial vehicle. I have a commercial Pajero insured privately and taxed commercially. And as of the last time I taxed min(last August) you couldn't tax a commercial 4x4 on the internet.

Just out of interest, who do you have quotes for private insurance from? I could only get FBD and Quinn to quote me privately.

got a private quote from Allianz that was 500 cheaper than FBD..amazing but true!!

Its a waste of money insuring a commerical privately..........you have no back seats or windows etc and can only carry one passenger eventhough your paying to carry 4 with you on a private policy.

I recently got my new (to me) 1992 Toyota Hilux Surf insured and they insisted on insuring it as a commercial vehicle even though it has back seats and no blacked out windows (Photo http://www.itsalongwaytotipperary.net/wp-content/gallery/Car/DSC_0112.jpg)

Does this mean that I could tax it commercially too? I'm a student so I obviously wouldn't be using it commercially but they don't have to know that...

    That sounds really dodgy!
Remember that insurance companies are made up of invertibrates and as they have no spines they can slip through even the smallest gaps in your policy in the event of an accident.

Also Costoms may have something to say if they stop you and you have a commercial tax disc on you passanger vehicle. I would fight with your insurance company to get a private policy or go elsewhere. Also how the hell does a student afford to run a 3.0L hilux?.. one thing for sure is that you arent studying architecture:D

Lol, that's the thing, I don't know if I can afford it! And just for the record i'm studying engineering, almost as bad.

I got the car (2.4L Diesel, again for the record) for a charity rally I was planning to do this summer. The trip fell through as my "friend" pulled out 4 days before departure, that's why i'm looking into getting it NCT'd and taxed. I think the problem with the insurers, FBD, was that they didn't have the Hilux SURF on file, only the Hilux.

I think i'll ring the insurance company first and get something in writing to confirm that it's ok being insured as a commercial vehicle.

You could probably commercialise it. Just take out the back seats and black out the rear side windows and submit it to customs/taxman for inspection. It will work out about 1700 euro cheaper to tax per year. the trade off is that youll have to do a DOE.

PS I remember reading about your trip, sorry to hear it was called off.
(just make sure that you do it before you buy a house or get weighed down with loans:D)

I have a Land Rover Defender which is insured privately and taxed commercial. I spoke to a woman who works for Quinn (my insurers) who was at my workplace dealing with something else. She said it was fine when she was working in motor insurance and as far as she knew still no problem. In the north however, commercial tax meant you must have sommmercial insurance.
My insurance is about €500 TP,F+T a year on a 2.5 turbo diesel. Tax €250ish.
DOE test is a dawdle as long as the basics are covered. All I had to do was universal join, seatbelt and a door lock.

Hi I have found some information out that may be very helpful for some people I have been reading old posts and alot of the information has now changed and no longer applies as I have found out the hard way. A hil lux for example has to be taxed private unless you own your own business and have 3 employees which means for the average joe soap your tax will go from 288 to 915 a year as they can no longer be taxed private and insured comercial or vice versa another great scam to rob the public so you can only have a commercial vehicle if it has no seats in the back so crew cabs unfortunately dont fall in to this class, even though if your vehicle is able to pull a 1 and 1/2 tonne trailer it MUST BE A 4X4 THATS THE LAW so if you have for example horses and a family you still cant use your crew cab as a commercial ie to pull your horsebox and also as a family car you would really need two vehicles, another way we are being taken for a ride by our wonderful system. Hope this is of help to some of you considering buying......
