Was trying to connect to the interweb today but my ripwave box kept just flashing 'searching' so I called irish broadband and pressed all the buttons I needed to talk to an ACTUAL person!

I was informed that my account was suspended due to 'suspect activity'???WTH  .........share a flat with two mates, have a wireless router and there's only three laptops on the network, or connection is really slow so it not as if we're down loading sh**loads or running a highly functioning network!!!

Nehoo the man asked me lots of questions and I must have sounded arsey cos he assured me that it was no refection on me as a customer its just that the account was asking for too much info from their central server said it could be the router??, ....(or something along those lines, I'm not very techie!!)
Can anybody explain how and why this may have happened??

He hooked me up again no bother but I'm very confused over it AND when I did get back on the net I had an email from them saying the account had been suspended.................................

hmmmm so I was informed ONLINE that we were disconnected...thus OFFLINE, so inable to retrieve the email that told me we were no longer able to access the internet ..............counter intuitive at all:rolleyes:???!!!

Is your wireless network secure? Sounds like someone is using your connection without your knowlege.

ya its secure, thought about that myself, do you reckon we should change the password to something more obscure??

    Heya,

ahhhh it sounds a bit odd to be honest, but if they are mentioning 'suspect activity' I would suspect that if
    1) You or your flat mates arent going anything
2)Someone has access to your network and is doing something nawty

I would suggest maybe plugging urself temporarily into the Ripwave without the router for a bit and see if they can still see this "strange activity" later on, if not you can defo rule out some stupud buggers from router or anything from ur flat mates.

Could be a spam trojan on any of the 3 pcs.

ya so after chatting to the flat mates found out that one of them had his Wii hooked up for about a WEEK trying to connect to the net to play mario kart online and forgot about it, and the other fella has no anti virus.......................and a liking for pictures of the pornographic nature ...........gggrrrrr boys!!!

So I'm presuming its one of those activities or a combination of both...........cos I'm as clean as a whistle :p

A common tactic is "supposed" video codec install or such like to view the er "images". When you click OK, the trojan spam bot is installed. You may even get to watch the video too (dunno).

    Most malware is:
    a) Seemless
    b) You did get fooled into clicking "OK" thinking it was a "cleanup wizard", toolbar or codec.
    c) Most AV is useless at detecting these things as they are NOT viruses, but applications that user is tricked into installing that have the extra stealth functions.

The wii is likely OK :)

hmmmmmmmmmmmm:mad: so irish braodband CUT ME OFF AGAIN, no correspondence about it WHATSOEVER!!!!! Just stopped it working!

I called again and was actuall talking to the same guy, I'm sure he was delighted!!! He said it was probably a router issue and to just connect directly to the ripwave with the cable for the next 24hrs and if the service isn't cut off in that time then contact belkin.............................. What might that suggest?

Anyone else have trouble with irish broadband??? From the look of all the threads on this forum everyone is having with their ISPs, grrrrrrrr.......its times like this that I wished I lived in south korea they have it sorted.................but they are also connected to North Korea:p

IBB cutting people off rather than people trying to escape IBB contracts? Oh the ironing.

I had a phone line installed specifically for DSL but when it wouldn't take it and NTL/UPC had no coverage I was forced into signing my soul away to said devil like a cornered animal.

The problem seems to be that certain types of Belkin Wireless Routers are issuing too many DHCP requests. I have been caught by this too and have been suspended twice. They told me I have to stop using this router.

Don't have a Belkin but got a Asus which already had a custom firmware for a good 3 years no problems

Never had a problem then got disconnected, no reason given no email sent, happened same day as that power cut in Dublin last week so knowing IBB though it was just the usual routine

Took a lot of pushing to get the exact reason out of the tech support guy, I made it clear I already had a custom firmware and that I knew what I was doing, all I needed was the exact reason.

It appears some routers issue too many requests over DHCP, no doubt not helped by the wonderfully slow response you get from IBB's DHCP server

Obviously someone turned my account off, not the decency to email me, account was off for 6 days in total since I was away for a few days so the rest of my family (who aren't tech savy) where left high and dry.

Do I have a claim for a refund?

Do I have a claim for a refund?

Doubtful. Issuing too many dhcp requests would be seen as an abuse of network and would be against their T+C. You should check if they have your right e-mail address.

Anyway, I've just been back onto them, it seems like the firmware for the Belkins above does fix the problem.

After a week of no problems, I'm getting suspended again. Seems like the firmware doesn't fix the problem.

Ah well, just been approved for 8MB BT broadband.

Congratualtions on the move :p Please remember us poor feckers when you're surfing unhindered by the IBB MAN!!!!

Just got onto them again, they are looking into what else might have caused the excessive DHCP requests, it might not be the router afterall.

Hello, I just read your messages in this thread; are there any updates? seems that I might be having the same problem (I haven't updated the firmware though, hoped to do that tonight - but maybe there are other things to be done?)
