Best Dublin garden centre?

My favourite garden centre used to be the Roches Stores one in Blackrock Shopping Centre, but to my dismay, I find that it's now gone.

It was a great place for finding rare herbs - rosemaries with electric-blue flowers; Thai basil; white lavender - and had really beautiful pots. The huge glowing-blue pot that my baby oak tree lives in came from there.

    What's the next best?

I like Murphy and Wood on the Johnstown Road. Lots of plants and pots, and they're knowledgeable.

more northerly - the ratoath garden centre - formerly the cottage garden centre, between ashbourne and ratoath.
    very friendly staff.

The one in Clondalkin across the Naas rd. is pretty comprehensive

The National Garden Centre in Kilquade is very good (take the N11 towards Wicklow and it is sign posted). They also have lovely exhibition gardens to look at which are great source of inspiration.

Would also recommend the Powerscourt Garden Centre. It looks like it should be expensive, but I have found it very reasonable for bedding plants and such like.

I would agree about Murphy and Wood - especially for more specialist stuff. Woodies are great for bog-standard plants.

Have not tried them myself, but hear good reports about Scalpwood on the way to Enniskerry.

I was up there the w/e before last and their was feck all in it - lots of lonely looking plants with shelves all to themselves no herbs or veg which it was fairly well stocked in when it opened, everything on the pricey side. B&Q in Tallaght is pretty good but its +1 Johnstown garden centre for me

As of yesterday it is now definately Jones garden centre in Donabate. I've never seen anything like it. They did a major build over the winter and the whole thing is now housed in a series of massive greenhouses. And they're prices are fantastic too. Fair play to them they have turned a smallish family business into a real competitor. Worth a visit just to see it.

Tulleys Nurseries or else Mount Venus for me.

Tulleys Nurseries actually supply most other garden centers and the likes of Woodies,Homebase and BnQ with the plants that they sell.

    Hope you all know that.;)

I like the orchard in celbridge myself too, mostly the cafe! There is a list of every garden centre in Ireland by county if you are looking for a list of them near you.

Over 1 million euro wasted on that new steel/glass place the built out there in Jones.

And what do they stick in it???some books and watering cans and plastic flowers.

And at the prices they are charging it will be a lifetime when or even if they claw back the money they wasted to build that thing.

Doyle Nurseries. Brennanstown rd , Cabinteely is excellent in my opinion. Others worth a look in South Dublin are Scalp Wood Nurseries and Grange Growers , both on left of the Stepaside to Enniskerry road .

I think Tully's is good for bulk buying and things like roll-out turf, but Rolestown seem to have much more of the type of plants I'd be buying for my garden.

as a matter of interest what type of plants are you referring to?

A good range of hanging basket/patio pot plants, vegetable seedlings, all sorts for the domestic gardener. I bought a dwarf pear tree in Rolestown this year too and a Brown Turkey fig tree and they were very reasonable.

Don't get me wrong, I do use Tully's but in general I think it's better suited to professional gardeners. It could be that smaller garden centres are more compact, and maybe it's a visual thing that they seem packed with a huge variety of what you want to buy that's in season. Smaller garden centres are much nicer to browse in, in my opinion.

I find Tully's just too big and spread out, and the system for paying in the office annoying but that's more to do with me having balance disorder.

Hasn't really recovered from the great days of the Celtic Tiger and its number one client Dermot Gavin. Buying those New Zealand ferns that are like weeds in NZ and charging 300 euros a pop. Whatever happened to the 250k Jerry Hall garden in Bettystown?

    Thanks

I was there yesterday not many customers it has to be said, it was lunch time so I went into the the coffee shop, costa coffee i think it was, anyway it was something like 6 euro for a soup and 5 euro for wrapped sambo . The plants they had were the same price as the one just outside Navan beside the fishing shop, I did think it was strange that they were selling clothes there though, it's a fine building.
