Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I'm totally new here which is a shame because if Iwould have known about this site months ago it might have meant that I would not now be one of those in the queue waiting to hear when the next recruitment drive will be. My question is about the application process. I registered on publicjobs.ie on 12/05 this year after returning from a few years living in Australia. I thought I would just receive an e-mail about the next open recruitment because there were so many over the last number of years so I didn't give it a second thought and just went on about my current job. Now reading this thread I can see that there was a recruitment drive after I registered however I never received a word. My question is could there be something wrong with the way I signed up on the website? I went in yesterday and it is set as a job alert for me with the date above as when I posted the alert so I can't understand why I didn't get notified in May. Maybe I registered too late, but reading this thread the May drive started a couple of days after I registered. Sorry about the long thread but I am just worried that I might miss the next recruitment because of a problem with the site or the way I registered. Any info would be a huge help.

    well okay
firstly: check again your www.publicjobs.ie alert : If that has ES Garda Recruitment set as an alert, then honestly that it all you can do and you will be notified when the next drive will start (which is now likely to be next year)

secondly: as for May campaign - what happens with the recruitment drives is that they open the post for a set time frame (approx 1week to 10days) and you have to be registered and have applied for the position within that time-frame only to be in the running for that campaign.

What i think happened to you was that the post was closed before you
registered and you were therefore not eligible to enter that recruitment drive. The campaign started then approx 1week after the post closed which would have been around the time that you registered.

    Hope the above makes sense.

K4S - Thanks for your reply. I figured that it would be something like that but when I found this site and read the start of this thread it freaked me a little. On the advice of a cousin who's a member, I spent the last ten years working and travelling to get a taste for what else is out there. In honesty, it's only made me realise that my first impulse to join the force out of college was the right one. At thirty and with the recession / cutbacks in hiring, I figure I might not have too many opportunities left to join so I got a bit antsy. Although I did hear an interview on the radio this lunchtime from our Commissioner saying that spending on frontline Garda requirements will not be affected, hopefully that means the cutbacks on recruitment won't be as bad as many here think.

no bother willit, that's what this forum is about. You know when it comes to cutbacks and recruitment: it is all about what is in their budget, what resources are required and what their target of Garda numbers actually is.

At the moment they have reached what they deem to be their target number of Gardai; and have scalled back the intakes to just about cover the retirements/resignations/dismissals etc. It is all about resources eatting into their budget and when their is an incident that requires increased Garda presence or increased Garda resources in an area at a certain time then that's resources out of their budget which just couldn't have been planned for.

Next year their will be 4recruitment drives and 4in-takes into Templemore but their will only be 400 taken in throughout all of next year as of now.

Situations will change and resources will be spent on where they are most needed, and recruitment was always going to be one that would be scalled back (unfortunate for those waiting to apply) but their is nothing we can do about that

Sorry for asking but whats the best preparation that you can do. At the moment I'm training my ass off trying to lost the weight but what else can be done.

For everyone waiting to hear on the next Garda Recruitment drive:

I just contacted P.A.S. and was informed that contrary to what was planned before, circumstances have now changed and their won't be another Garda Recuitment Drive in 2008 & Their are no plans as to when next year one will be organised.

Heads up though ... It just means more time to prepare for when it does come around. Competition will be tough again & all the preparation you can do in the mean-time should certainly stand to you.

You know what, it used to be so predictable, right down to the exact week but now, well not so much.
At the moment it is looking very likely to be next year before another recruitment drive commences. The month? well some say early in the year because it will take so long to get the number of applicants through the entire process. More say late in the year because they have so many people ready and able to get into Templemore that they don't need to interview people for some time to come.

It is just so unpredictable. The last drive was in May this year and they appear to have the number of applicants for next year already due to backlogs from previous years so it really is anyone's guess right now, unfortunately, nobody knows for definite

Is the Garda Reserve worth doing while waiting for another recruitment campaign? for the experience, training and for application to the Garda....

Absolutely worth doing. It will give you an insight into the job we do before you go for training and put up with the crappy wages as a student.

It looks like they may freeze PSNI recruitment, and I think those in the process of being recruited by the army have been told their details will be kept on file but nothing else. I suppose those of us hoping to join the Gardai should just be happy recruitment is still continuing, even if its slower than we'd like.

As someone else pointed out recruitment was going to slow anyway as Garda numbers are near the government target.

It is a little disheartening though. I've applied for the Garda Reserve, and am trying to get my fitness levels up. Trying to think of tangible things I can do to help my application rather than just getting down about things.

With increased competition for fewer places though its not going to be a bad recession for those who run the courses for the apptitude tests and interview stages! :p

There's pretty much a consensus that next year's intakes will be taken from those already in the system, am I right?

The only consensus is here on boards, not in an official capacity. Rummers are always rife on boards, long time boardies will tell you if you dont here it from the horses mouth, dont take it as gospel, if you do, you will go mad. no one can say for sure when the next recruitment drive will take place or when it wont take place. NO OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT HAS BEEN MAD WITH REGARDS TO GARDA RECRUITMENT till there is one we all have to sit tight :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 692 ✭✭✭i-digress

Oh yeah I know, I've been watching these boards for a long time before I even officially joined the site. I've put my name down for a job alert when it comes through eventually, and I know this is all I can do. I know there's huge variables...I've got a lot on next year, getting married is only part of it, so I have to plan ahead to some degree. I know there is no concrete answer, but I'm just going to plan around the most probable outcome which is that I'll be waiting a long time. I think the uncertain infuriating recruitment system is part of the test, if you stick the course you have the patience to be a garda!

The best way to prepare is read everything there is on current crime levels (AGS website), media reports, talk to individual Gardai and read and post on the ES forum to get the general idea of the job etc. and of course do the prep courses too. Anything you can think of will help.

Register for the job alerts on Public jobs and when a recruitment drive opens, you will get an e-mail on how to apply.
At the moment, the only job available is the reserves but once the full time member option becomes available, it will be up there too.
As far as I know Kilroys are only the prep courses and nothing to do with applying.
As for when the next drive will be, its anyones guess, some are saying Feb next year, I've heard March or April but noone knows really.

    Hope this helps!

thanks jwt22, so when the full time member positions become available will people registered in the reserves be notified by email? are the reserves another way to get a full member position or is it worth doing? so i suppose its just about being patient then?

cheers mate thanks for your help

No, if you apply for the reserves, it's a seperate application. Reserve members are not paid and cannot carry out all the duties full time members do. The training is only a few days or weeks.
I havent applied for it, this is gonna be my first time going through the whole process so dont know if it's benificial to have. Most say it is but it doesnt fast-track the full time application at all.
If you want to become a ful time member, you have to sign up on this option on public jobs and then you will be notified.
Yep, its all about the patience, its something I'm learning a lot about with this whole thing!

    Hi I-Ron.
You have to set up an account on publicjobs, then go into My Job Alerts, Create New Job Alert, Security/ Emergency Service... and then select Garda from the drop down menu.
    Hope that helps ;)

oh okay, well i did that already. i just presumed it was only for the reserves. thats what pops up when i go into my applications anyway, when i go into job alerts it just says Garda. thanks blue belle jwt22

I'm in my final year in college and just discovered this board, i had no idea there was such a huge queue! I had always planned to join after I graduated and a few friends left early and got in this summer and it seems like they just got in in time! I only applied on irishjobs earlier this week, does that mean I'm looking at 2010 application?

Did you mean to say Publicjobs.ie?

No one really knows when the next recruitment campaign will be. The numbers being taken in next year will be around 400 so I would imagine they will already have those numbers from the 2007 campaign tbh (campaign advertised in 2007 and recruiting in 2008).

    Hi Guys

Sorry if this question has been asked before but I couldnt seem to find an answer to it.

I am due to sit my Leaving Cert in June 2009 an I was wondering if it would be beneficial for me to go on to College and get a degree and then apply for the next Garda recruitment drive when I finish college?

Or do I stand the same chance as everyone one else as getting recruited with only a Leaving Cert and having previous work experience?

    Thanks..
