Im not sure Kerry, the only that they do that could detect that as far as I can remember is to stand up on your toes for a few seconds...

Yeah i wondered that when you are standing on your toes and they see that you do have flat-foot/fallen arches could that be held against you.

They check it for a reason and i wondered has anyone heard of it effecting the end result on the day

    Hi there,

I have wanted to join the gaurds for some time, but have fears regarding the medical, In 2005 I was diagnosed with a cancerous tumour on my right leg, Now I under went chemotherapy and surgery and am since in great health (touch wood and all that :P )

So my fear is will this hold me back in joining the guards ??? Will they worry about letting someone in with my past medical history and therefore reject my application ???

As I say, I'm not familiar AT ALL with this, so If anyone could help me with this or have any information I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks

    Jeff

    Hi Jeff,

No expert on this but had medical recently for GR, which is I believe the same procedure as for new full time recruits. On the med form it does ask your very question however, if you can show physical proof e.g. a letter from your consultant/doctor saying you are now clear, good to hear by the way, they shouldn't hold that against you.

I had a minor operation for a small complaint, put down on form, doctor didn't even comment, I had a letter just in case. I know it happened to a another person where the doctor asked for such a letter, but it seems to depend on the doctor you meet.

Hopefully there are a few people on the this thread who can answer your question from their own similar experiences.

    Regards.

Yeah, you do the hearing test downstairs with the nurse first, then the medical with the doctor.
bmi is a joke anway, doesnt take muscle mass into affect, you could be built like a tank with no body fat and still be classed as obese! They should use the bf% test instead, but bmi is easy for them to do. Get weight/height and make a calculation. No work involved

bmi is a joke and it all depends on what doctor you get it seems to be. some people on this thread have got through wit bmi's bigger than 30 so it is really hard to know .

its silly if you leave it up to chance. Regardless if you are a super star championship footballer or the next Drico.

If you want to get into the gards you will have made sure of passing the medical by working on your bmi and getting to down to what ever you need to pass.

as ive said before, Fail to prepare, prepare to fail. :)

    +1

You should be leaving nothing to chance. Plenty of lads who did the pct were quite fit beforehand, but did a good few weeks training beforehand just to make sure. Same goes for the medical.

Excuse the ignorance, but wat is BMI ???

    Thanks

    Body mass Index

The body mass index (BMI), is a statistical measure of the weight of a person scaled according to height.

    From Wiki

Basically from a medical point of view if puts you into categories of Under weight , Healthy , Over weight and Obese.

Would it make a difference if your BMI was low? Like if you are underweight, or are they more worried about being over weight?

hi grey diamond. im not sure but they mite say to put on weight. i would be more concerned with your pct if your underweight. it mite be hard for you to pass the push pull test.

Cheers mate. Would probably be a bit underweight but plenty of upper body. How hard is the push pull test does anyone know??

Not very hard, although you might be wrecked after the obstacle course.

But during the open day, one of the instructors said that he only ever saw one lad failing it. It's more common for girls though.

Would just hate to get that far and fail on something like that. So long as I pass the interview, Id be happy enough. Eyesight and push pull are my two biggest worries.

:eek: thats a bit of a farce. Surely if you went to a specialist and they said your hearing is ok they should accept that. Anyone can have a bad day in that hearing box on the day of the medical.

It varies greatly. My medical was about two months after interview and pct was about 6 weeks after medical. But there are people who get called much quicker and in the month up to an intake you could have medical and pct within a few days of each other. Unfortunately there is no definative answer to this one. Hope this helps some.
