Was in Brown Thomas in Cork today and they no longer sell any coffee machines that aren't Nespresso.

Isn't that a great choice; you buy a machine that only takes capsules supplied by Nestle or none at all.

Oh, they do still sell cafeterres.
I wonder how long before BT crumble on that too?

This also means no after sales for my Gaggia machine.

That's shocking. Why not bang the managment off an email. You could contact Ann* the Gaggia rep in Brown Thomas, Grafton St. and see if she has any sway.

Much prefer the new sig btw. Welcome to boards :)

I think Howard is the forum expert on the BT coffee staff ;)

This is a sad day for coffee if BT are doing this nationwide.
What would we do without internet shopping.
Home Store & More still stocked the Gaggia range the last
time I was in a store as do House of Fraser I believe.

it's a pity the galway branch don't even do coffee related gear.

    Very sad.

Pure market forces are to blame, I imagine. If proper espresso gear was selling, you can be sure they wouldn't be dropping it. But even BTs can't afford to dedicate store real estate to lines that don't sell.

The trouble is, for all our apparent new sophistication, most Irish people still just want to drink 'coffee'.

    market forces as you say

good coffee at home is a hobby, not just a drink

its expensive, messy, hard to master, etc etc
i'm not surprised that its a niche market

jar of nescafe = 3 quid
machine, grinder, roaster, green beans = 1000e +

i had a loan of a nespresso machine when
    i started my coffee interest
they are very convenient (if you like sh*t coffee!)

i would always advise people to use good beans, a grinder
and a filter machine or cafetiere for good coffee without the
mess and expense of espresso machines

If don't like sh*t coffee and I use a nespresso machine 4 times a day, mine makes a very good coffee, probably yours is broken :D

Ah, In case you're wondering I'm Italian and I know what "good coffee" means

Additionally, a cafetiere doesn't make a good coffee; the espresso is the way, the best way to extract the real coffee taste is using pressurized water (> 15bar); just hot water doesn't work, at all.
