Car for the Mongol Rally

Not sure if anyone has heard of this but I'm off on the the Mongol Rally (for Charity) and am wondering if anyone has any suggestions on a suitable car.

Conditions are under £1000, under 1000cc (£100 quid extra entry fee for larger engines) and 'reliable'. Im relatively mechanically competent, but would be hoping for something simple incase anything goes wrong. Its a 10,000 mile trip through rough terrain so needs to be sturdy. Was thinking a Panda 4x4, but hard to find, or maybe a Vitara and pay the fine.


Any one participated in the rally before?

I'd for a Nissan Micra K10 (boxy shaped 1983-1993 model). Very simple to work on and they're quite reliable.

Make sure to get a Haynes manual aswell.

Alternatively, you could go for a Subaru Justy AWD. They have a 1 litre engine. There is a few of them on Buy & Sell.

A couple from Meath did it in a Nissan Micra. They had very little problems with the car and it handled the journey very well. I wouldn't go for a small 4x4 as this will just add extra complexity to the car and possibly more to go wrong.

i know a fella selling a peugeot 106...


954 cc , very simple engine.


quite rigid , best handling fwd shopping cart.... even by todays standards... needs a little tidying for test but part from that its mint !!


AC , front disc brakes , blackphaunt radio.... everything you need , also not many if Any cars on this planet have near the amount of parts available for the 106/ax/saxo
