Fake Link Through Msn

    Hi,

After being very cautious recently regarding links sent to me via msn, I today received a link from a friend. It was very personal in nature, link contained my name etc. Followed by "check this out, it's hilarious" and like a fool I clicked it not thinking twice. So now my friends on msn are getting said links from me. Is it enough to change my passwords? Have done so twice and it appears not to have worked first time.

    Any advice appreciated, thanks!

No, you'll need to clean the bug off your machine. It will be able to send as long as you are logged in.

Follow the steps in the sticky above and post any logs generated in this thread.

Deckards System Scanner is the log we need to see

This sort of infection steals passwords so if you use online banking I would get in touch with the company.

    Hello

    1. Please re-open HiJackThis and choose do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):

    F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\system32\%%%%^^%^^% %% ^ %^^ %% %% ^%^% ^ .exe
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

    2. Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, including browsers, so that nothing other than HijackThis is open, then click Fix Checked. A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES. Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

Are you editing the name of this file

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\%%%%^^%^^% %% ^ %^^ %% %% ^%^% ^ .exe

Please visit this web page for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet.

For more information on the Windows XP Recovery Console read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058.

Once you install the Recovery Console, when you reboot your computer, you'll see the option for the Recovery Console now as well. Don't select Recovery Console as we don't need it. By default, your main OS is selected there. The screen stays for 2 seconds and then it proceeds to load Windows. That is normal.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

Quick idea... but one that worked for me once. A bit of a fudge though. Might solve your problem without hours messing around.

Since you know the date you were infected you can search for any .exe, .dll or such files on your computer. they'll probably be somewhere in your Windows or system32 directory (they were for me, but not always). Searching for files created on that date should catch anything that could be the worm.

If one that pops up looks suspicious, either with random character string names or whatever, delete it.

But please, search by the date you know you were infected on, otherwise you'll just get every .dll on the system onscreen. Also bear in mind, if you've installed any programs on that same date, their components might also show up.

If you get lucky, it can work, and it'll save a lot of messing. If not, you only wasted ten-minutes of your time. Big deal. If you're unsure, post the details of what your search brings up on the board...somebody will know what's legit and what isn't.

    Finally.

These worms only effects MsN. If you just thing it's too much bother to get rid of, try using Trillian or Pidgin instead for IM. They both have the advantage of being able to handle just about every other IM protocol out there too.

I have this exact same problem. I contracted it in the same manner and it is currently spaming my list of MSN contacts. I haven't gone through the sticky yet but a BitTorrent 2008 full system scan came back clear just a few mins ago. Rather worried as I have very large sums of money online.

How high is the risk of this thing obtaining my passwords?
