Kangaroos beat Kiwis 28-12 in centenary rugby Test on Friday

SYDNEY, Australia — Mark Gasnier scored twice in the first 15 minutes Friday to lift Australia to a 28-12 win in a match marking 100 years of rugby league internationals against New Zealand.

The centenary Test was played at the Sydney Cricket Ground, where New Zealand edged Australia 11-10 in the first Test match in 1908. Gasnier gave Australia a 6-0 lead in the sixth minute then crossed again almost in the same spot for his second try.

Second-rower Paul Gallen barged over from short range to for a try in his Test debut before skipper Cameron Smith made it 22-0 in the 22nd minute.
The Australians held onto the four-try lead at the break, with fullback Billy Slater cutting down diminutive Kiwi hooker Issac Luke inches from the tryline in New Zealand's best chance of the first half. Setaimata Sa started New Zealand's comeback with a try three minutes after halftime.

The Kiwis dominated possession and territory early in the second half but Australia sealed the result when Israel Folau scored in the 64th minute to make it 28-6.

It was a vast improvement for New Zealand following a 58-0 loss in Wellington in October, but not enough to prevent Australia from improving its record in 100 years of Tests against New Zealand to 83-27-2.
Players and the almost 35,000 spectators observed a minute of silence in tribute to Jack Gibson, one of Australia's greatest rugby league coaches, who died two hours before kickoff. He was 79. Gibson, a five-time premiership coach who was voted last month as Australia's rugby league coach of the century, died after a long illness.

Not exactly a level playing field though is it, given the relative strengths of the game in each country. The fact that the kwis are competitive at all is a minor miracle.

Seem to have improved since the tests over here...I went to two of the GB games and NZ were totally out of their depth, embarrassingly so...very one sided...Reckon they need McClennan back! If he could do for the kiwis what he does for Leeds...

Cheers for the try footage..absolutely amazing piece of athleticism

How did Brent Webb go for the Kiwis?

All those NZ players actually play with the Australian's week in and week out. NZ does have the star players but they just havent been able to gel properly. They need a good coach, Wayne Bennett is an excellent start but give them time. This NZ outfit has the potential to slaughter Great Britain.
