Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

.avi preview causes windows explorer to crash

I have a problem with windows explorer on XP where if I'm in a folder that contains any .avi files it causes explorer to crash. Basically explorer can't handle .avi thumbnail previews. From googling the problem it seems to be fairly common. An easy solution is to run the following commands to turn off the previews:

    regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll
    regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll

I find the preview feature really useful though so I did some further googling and came up with this
I had exactly the same problem until I came across this handy little registry hack. Run regedit and find the following key :- HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler Delete the “Default” value then close. You should now be able to see .avi previews almost instantly but without the crashes

Unfortunately this only seemed to fix the problem for a few days and then it came back worse than ever :(
Does anyone know if there is any other fixes that allows you to keep the previews?

Also this is the error details from when explorer crashes

    Error Signature
    AppName: explorer.exe
    AppVer: 6.0.2900.3156
    ModName: xvid.ax
    ModVer: 0.0.0.0
    Offset: 0003dd11

Reinstall or update Xvid? Does it only happen with Xvid encoded files, are you able to distinguish what is and isn't and seperate them as a test?

I had a similar problem ages ago. Same thing avi files caused explorer to crash but I got a data execution prevention message box instead. It turned out to be a problem with my codecs, uninstalling and re-installing k-lite codec pack solved it. If you have any codecs installed try un-installing them and re-installing them.

Update any codec packs that you might have.

I don't have any codecs installed. I use VLC player to watch all my video files. I never had this problem up until I did a clean install of windows recently. The only program I can think of that I have now that I didn't have before that might be something to do with it is iTunes/Quicktime. I absolutely hate this software but my brother got an ipod

In case anyone else is having this problem I have managed to fix it with a combination of upgrading to the latest version VLC player and also installing a standalone xvid codec

You need to find the corrupt .avi file that is causing the crashes and try to either re-encode it or change it to a different format.

This thread is 6 months old.

That and the OP has SOLVED the problem.

    This was 6 months ago!?
Anyway like I said in my first post it was when I previewed ANY avi files that explorer crashed. I didn't have any problems with corrupt avi files, it was an issue with windows trying to render thumbnail previews of the avi. It was fixed with the xvid codec anyway.
