    Not at all surprised really.

    Diesel is expensive compared to petrol, even direct injection petrols with a turbo/supercharger which are the most expensive type of petrol engine to build, the new emissions regs coming up will make diesel even dearer, and hybrid technology in a petrol costs a fortune compared to diesel, so that makes diesel hybrids only really viable in big luxobarges that cost a fortune anyway.

    The latest direct injection forced induction petrol engines(as pioneered by VAG ironically) get very close to diesel for CO2 output as petrol has a CO2 output per unit consumed of 11% less than diesel i.e. if a petrol engine is 11% less economical than a diesel, then the CO2 output is identical.

    Hybrid technology is said to be 25% more economical in a petrol engine but only 20% more economical in a diesel. Unless the Governments start paying huge subsidies, then you will be paying a small fortune for one of these compared to a petrol car and unless you do intergalactic mileage and keep the car for several years, you'll never recoup that investment.

    Truth is that if you want a lower "Carbon footprint" then traditional diesel engines are the best way at the moment, none of this hybrid rubbish. Hybids are a marketing gimmick, no more nor no less.

    Nearly sure I saw on here about someone who had a hybrid and was getting 70 MPG or so.

    With the way diesel prices are going a 70 MPG petrol hybrid is a lot more attractive than a 70 MPG diesel!

    That was JHMEG(and it was a Civic IMA which officially does 57.6 mpg, he said his wife's one does 70 on a cruise, though he never said what speed he travelled at, if you drive at a constant 80 or 90 you'd be amazed at how much more efficient a car is than travelling at 120 or even 100), who is now gone to another forum. One swallow doesn't make a summer you know;)!

    If he (or his wife) can do it, there's hope for the rest of us!

    57.6 MPG aint too shoddy either. Might be a better 2nd hand punt than a diesel?

    EDIT: with diesel about 8% dearer than petrol, at 57.6 MPG a comparative diesel would need to do 62.2 MPG.
