    Hi,
Can somebody explain to me the reason for the weather were having? I don't know a whole lot about weather systems but have always wanted to learn abit.

    Thanks.

High pressure over the North sea, dragging warm continantal air across us and keeeping Atlantic weather a bay.

    Mike.

What do the numbers on the legend on the right mean? What's causing this high pressure and how does it pull good weather around it and keep bad weather away?

    Cheers.

I dunno, but a higher authority will be along to explain I'm sure.

The numbers on the map are the pressure in milli-bars (higher the pressure the "quieter" the weather).

Here is a link about atmosphereic pressure
    http://www.usatoday.com/weather/wbarocx.htm

As regards weather good or bad, it depends whwre the pressure is centred, for example if the current pattern happened in January it would be freezing cold as east european/Russian air mass was sucked westwards.

High pressure moves air in a clockwise direction, low pressure is anti-clockwise. So a low pressure cell to the south west will bring Atlantic weather our way from the SW. A high pressure system in the same location will bring weather from the west-northwest as it drags weather around the northern side of it (obviously it depends on size of the system to a degree)

Altantic low pressure systems contain a hugh amount of energy as they move on the jet stream Not all low presure is related to the jet stream though.

High pressure kills air movement and everything happens more slowly - so you can have high pressure weather with little or no variation for days even weeks on end.

    Mike.
