Drops might be a step too far, but I much prefer them than flat bars, and they offer lots of variety in hand position.

(think we're well on the way to at least another 5 pages :D)

Lads give it a rest or else create a seperate slagging thread, the OP is looking for advice not what you think of each other and who has the best knowledge etc.

    @OP
Yes cycling is a great way of loosing weight, however for it to work, he needs to implement it into his everyday life. Eg:- Cycling to work, or cycling to the shop, cycling to the gym etc. Its no use just buying a bike and expecting him to use it every now and again. It just wont work, it will sit in the garage and rot.

Also if his gym does spinning classes they are a great way of loosing weight and it will also determine whether his body will be able for long cycles.

they best bike the OP can buy in my opinion is a hybrid with a adjsutable stem and a aftermarket saddle, 24 gears, and aroung the e400 mark.
6061 aluminium frame, steel or carbon seat post.
If you pick through all the mud slinging this is actually very solid advice.

Wow this thread is probably the worst example for any kind of beginner looking to get a bike. Too much arguing, conflicting advice and overly technical specs  Get a grip people!

I agree, keep it simple. Good luck to the OP if still reading through this. I reckon just use normal clothes and use the bike to go to work, pub etc just like an ordinary bike and get a bit of exercise into the day naturally that way. Cycling is easy and fun and useful, no matter what you're wearing.

The other stuff will come later when the bike obsession kicks in:)

and you could smack the bouncer with your "awesomeness" couldnt you??? because we all know you just "reek of awsomeness" and are sooooooooooooooo not a poser, as you were born with spandex and a sock strapped to the leg:rolleyes:

hows the aul e200 racer ya got going?? broken yet?

    muppet

The fact that you resort to completely baseless innuendo, asterisked-out words, massively repetitious punctuation and smilies, childish name-calling, etc. strongly suggests that it's a complete waste of my time to respond. But just for the record:
    • Difficult to put a price on my bike because it was bought overseas and I've had various after-market upgrades done since. But €2,500 give or take is probably close enough.
    • It has ~16,000 km on it, during which time it's naturally had to get new cassettes, chains, cables, brake blocks, etc. But otherwise it's going grand thanks.
    • My jerseys and jackets are a mix of cheap Australian brands and Aldi.
    • I never wear replica pro team jerseys (that said, it's funny how cyclists in replica jerseys wind people up, but nobody seems to mind amateur soccer players training in replica Premiership shirts).
    • My shoes are entry level Specialized in black, and I wear them over black, no-name coolmax socks which cost about €4 per pair.
    • Shorts is one area where shedding out a little bit is totally justified. That said, my sweet spot is €80-100 per pair, so they're clearly not Assos.
    • My helmet is plain grey and the labels are still with the warranty card.
The above combination would be fairly representative of what you'd find with the other guys I train with too. If that makes us a bunch of poseurs to your mind, so be it - I think we'll get over it.

    What happened to this thread?
Which bouncers are we supposed to be smacking?

cantalach- If you hang around here a bit longer I think you'll understand not to bait Kona once he gets into a run. And in fairness to Kona it's the boards software that is putting in the asterisks, I am sure he is swearing away underneath it all. (Hint: you have to use accents on your swear-words to get them through.)

And BTW- black socks? Are you serious?

OK, thanks - I was rapidly coming to that conclusion myself anyway.

'Fraid so! Sure I couldn't wear white socks - that would only accentuate what remains of my antipodean tan, leaving me open to accusations of "poseur!"

Wow, you're right, Verb, this is fun :)
And cock makes it through the censor.
That must be so as not to offend real cocks.

Edit: I'm not actually referring to anyone with that last statement!

OP (if you're still here that is) I got back on the bike 3 years ago (aged late 30s) when I realised I was carrying more weight than I wanted to. I had the option of cycling or joining a gym. I picked cycling because of the fresh air and the fact there are no yearly renewal fees. I have lost a lot of weight and am now in good trim and because of this I can justify life's little extras in the grub depatment. I found that once I started to exercise I decided what was the point of eating badly at the same time so I gave up bread and a few other niceties also and things went from there. (COINCIDENTALLY you understand) I am now selling my bike if you're interested:

    http://www.adverts.ie/showproduct.php?product=56476&cat=500

as I am upgrading due to the money I have saved by eating and drinking well-and less (oh yeah, and cycling).
