    Hey,

    Sorry to hear that! Fairly sucky, just make sure you watch them and notice any big changes in them!

    I've studied them as part of my pathologies in college so I can tell you a bit.

    You can bathe them in cool water, or place some ice on them (wrapped in a wet tea towel) to shrink swollen veins, but it's only a temporary fix. You could pick up a pair of "sexy" socks in the chemist that restricts the blood from pooling in your legs.

    Other than that you should exercise regularly to keep the circulation going strong. Another suggestion is to watch your weight so that there's no too much pressure on the legs aswell as strenthening and toning them.

    It's a terrible habit but try not to cross your legs when sitting and also don't wear tight clothes too often because again it restricts the blood flow.

    I know my aunt has the beginnings of some and is able to cover them up with make up and fake tan!

    Go to your GP. Since they're only slight you'll probably be able to have them injected.

    Also if they're very small you should be able to get laser removal done on them - quick easy effective and non-painful. Your GP will refer you to a specialist depending on what type you have. Better to get it done when they start rather than waiting for them to get larger.

    Actually in most cases where a woman is the patient the doctors are very reluctant to remove the veins (either by stripping or laser) until after the woman has finished having children. Many women have trouble with veins during pregnancy and there is no point removing them only for it all to happen again 3 kids later.

    Yeah but a lot of the time it depends on the type you have and what they're caused by. I had to get quite large ones removed when I was 18, and twice again since then. It will also depend on your doctors attitude, and also how are they going to know when you're finished having kids? If that were the case no women could get their veins done til after menopause!!

    Of course it depends on the severity of the veins and also the doctor in question. The majority of them won't operate until a woman is in her 40s. At this stage its a fairly safe bet that she is not going to have (at least by design) any more children.

    Your best bet is to make an appointment to see a vascular surgeon.

    They specialise in this area and see a huge number of these, and will tell you the best solution to your individual problem.

    But the current treatment modalities are

    * Compression stockings
    * Photoderm Laser Therapy for spider veins
    * Endovenous Laser Therapy
    * Varicose Vein Surgery

    If they are spider veins you can either go for laser therapy or sclerotherapy.
    i tried both (stupid genetics, my mum has them badly and now so do i). laser therapy i thought was not very effective, but more expensive and as painful as sclerotherapy. painful is possibly a bit ott, it hurts but it's bearable!

    sclerotherapy (if done well) has been super successful in my case and after my second sitting the spider veins are now almost gone. that;s not to say they won;t come back but for now they're gone and i will closely monitor them in the future.
    i got them done in the advanced beauty treatment place on lombard street, the girl's name is connie (i got their name through advanced cosmetic surgery). she has been very very good and really thorough and gentle so can highly recommend her!!!
    i went to the laser centre last year but was rather disappointed. hard to get appointments, they were not throrough at all and i hardly noticed a difference after 5 sittings.
    hope this helps.

    How long does it take for the treatment to work? Doesn't it involve wearing stockings for several weeks???

    Could anyone tell me if varicose veins treatment is available in Ireland through the public service by being given a letter from a GP to a hospital?
    Or do I have to deal with this problem in private clinics only?

    And the other issue: are the treatments held in public hospital on good level? They won't probably do the newest laser surgery, do they?

    My sister had a lot of small veins treated publicly through Beaumont Hospital - the clinic she was sent to is actually held in St. Joseph's in Raheny, and the treatment she had was really good.You could always enquire about laser treatment.

    Thanks for your reply. Could you just tell me if she had to wait a long time for the appointment?

    No I think you can get a referral for a hospital from your doctor, or at least i know someone who did years ago! :o You'd be as well just going to your doctor and finding out how to prevent them and deal with them.

    My sister had a few years ago, varicose veins and undergo a laser treatment closure (remove) varicose veins. two years ago, varicose veins again appeared, and her legs began to swell.
    For me too varicose veins began to appear so I became interested in the subject and I found the information from laser treatment for varicose veins only helps visually and for some period of time (from one to five years) and in no way improve the state of deep vein. For this there are often terrible complications.
    I was on treatments with the use of medicinal leeches because I heard from my aunt that it can helps. Now I know that laser treatment is only masking the problem and does not cure the problem of the valves in varicose veins. I am now after a series of treatments and already after the first treatment the pain on my legs has passed. from what I heard that my body undergoing detoxification and the whole immune system is purified and strengthened. For a series of treatments I paid just under 500 euros, After a few months I should do it again. treatments do not hurt just a little stung at the beginning where leeches were applied. Varicose veins do not disappeared but are softer and much smaller. I am very happy.

    The doctor did not tell my sister how it exactly looks with laser treatment, and as she began to inquire exactly received no answer this is very sad.
