Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Yeah in Changmai, famous for treks. Did a 2 day trek with elephant ride, overnight in a local village, white water rafting etc. Class. Very cheap too

    Why not do both?? :D

Chiang Mai trekking is amazing - the adventure co. have a great one where you can do some quad biking and white water rafting along with the trek - highly recommended..

Sapa is beauftiful and a few days there is certainly a must IMO
Also villages north of Chiang Mai may be worth checking out..

Laos offers some grueling treks - around Laung Prabang, be careful picking a compeny though as this can affect the overall enjoyment of your trip :)

Please please please don't do an elephant trek. Its an unbelieveably cruel, and money driven industry, and the stories I could tell you would bring a tear to your eye. Look at my signature- why would you want to sit on a park bench on an elephants back? Seriously? And watch the mahoot hit the elephant in the head with a hooked metal stick? Do you really want to see that? If you claim you LOVE elephants?

I thoroughly recommend a stint in the elephant rescue in N. Thailand called www.elephantnaturepark.org. All the proceeds go towards rescuing ex-logging elephants, street elephants and 'trekking' elephants from a cruel and thankless lifestyle.

You won't get to ride them, but you will get to walk WITH them, wash them in the river, feed them, watch them interact in family groups as free, intelligent animals. It was an amazing experience. We even got to see a baby! And I got chased by him! :pac: Here is the story and pictures of my experience there: http://www.ballofdirt.com/entries/9772/126921.html - you can also go trekking in the vicinity of their grounds.

Please just think about what you're planning to do and why. If you're intested in trekking, there are plenty of treks you can do that don't involve paying these brutes.

Hi! Yes I've been to vietnam, didn't find the people as genuine as in Thailand or Malaysia, but Sapa was great for trekking. Lovely scenery up there.

If you're really interested in something different, south western china has a lot to offer in the way of treks - in particular Tiger Leaping Gorge is well worth the trip! Also loads of scenic mountains where you can get away from it all and stay in monastries on the sumit! I found the locals WAY friendlier than the vietnamese, and the food was EXCELLENT! Travelling is cheap too ......
