Bojan actually asked Aragones to leave him out of the squad, if he was considering bringing him in because he's had a long season and wants to recover. Can't believe Sergio Garcia made it into the Spanish 23 either. Raúl should definitely be in there ahead of him. Tbh Garcia is just a carbon copy of Andriy Voronin, right down to their appearance. Aragones justification for leaving Raúl out was, "I look at the players themselves, not whether their team is first, second or third in the league. There are lots of other players that have scored more goals than Raúl per minutes played and they're also not coming". Link

Anyway, nice to see Dani Güiza and De la Red get the recognition they deserve but I'm disappointed that Jarque wasn't included. Quality player imo. 5 premiership players in the squad and 4 of them are from Liverpool! Arteta can probably feel hard done by aswell. All in all, there are some quality players in there, particularly Casillas, Ramos, Xavi, Iniesta, Fabregas and Torres. I'm just hoping they can actually play together.

Not really surprised by raul being left out, the attitude of some of theformer managers in treating him as special is what ruined spains chances at some of the previous tournys.

Other way round, him trying to pick the team, seemingly hes changed now and isnt such a prima donna. Oddly they wont miss him that squad is more than good enough to win it, full backs seems to be the weak link there assume Ramos going central.

Amazing that Spain can leave the calibre of player out like Albelda, Arteta, Joaquin and Raul!

They've excellent goalkeepers too. Has anyone else seen the Villarreal keeper this year, Diego López? He was understudy to Casillas at Madrid for 2 years but understandably never got a look in. He's been sensational this year, looks the complete keeper yet would not have been within a sniff of the Spain squad.

8 players from the Barca academy in the squad, not a bad stat. Citeog, its not fair to compare Garcia to Voronin, he's much much better...

So, quality players not going to Euro 08- Bojan, Arteta, Joaquin, Morientes, Raul, Guti, Albelda... Not a bad set of players there...

It is going to be a very nervous few weeks, I just hope all our players come back injury free, I have a bad feeling about RVP if he makes the final squad.

Raul was never going to be in the squad. Don't know why it is even news. The Spanish manager does not like him, never has. He was never going to include him

Wonder will Bojans request come back to haunt him? Seems like a silly thing to ask.

Very surprised Joaquin is excluded. Albelda has not figured, rightly or wrongly, for valencia all season, so that aint a surprise either.

Re Arteta, I think the Spanish don't look too kindly on players moving abroad before proving themselves in S

Disagree, there are countless numbers of players in the Arteta mould playing everywhere in La Liga, its just that he is in the premiership and seen by the UK so much that he gets so much praise... The fact of the matter is, he would be far down the pecking order of a midfield which has competition among Iniesta, Fabregas, Silva, Xavi, De La Red, Senna and Alonso...

    ...or Sagna!

I expected Trezeguets exclusion - he hasn't really featured the last year with the emergence of Benzema, but how can Clichy not get in the squad?...he's the best left-back in the world!

7 to drop out. My picks would be Steve Mandanda, Jean-Alain Boumsong, Julien Escude, Mathieu Flamini, Hatem Ben Arfa, Djibril Cisse, Bafetimbi Gomis

Great squad for the French, whole lot of potential in there. Favourites?

What's more, that will be an unbelievable team come 2010:

    Sagna----Gallas
    Abidal
    Evra/Clichy
    Flamini
    Diarra/Toulalan----
    --Ribery
    ????
    Ben Arfa---
    Benzema

Stick a quality attacking central midfielder/playmaker (another Zidane comeback?!) in there and that could be another World Cup-winning French side, espcially with the strength in depth they have.

In fairness Sagna has been injured, though I agree he is the better player than Clerc and maybe even Sagnol. And again, in fairness to Domenech, the French have hilarious strength at left full - Evra and Abidal, as well as Clichy. Considering Gallas can also easily cover, there would really be no point in bringing three. Harsh on Clichy to be dropped since he's playing brilliantly, but Abidal is first choice (for some reason) and can also cover centre back, and Evra IMO is better than Clichy, just. Like I said, very unfair on Clichy because he'd probably start for any other country in the world, but them's the breaks.

Up steps Samir Nasri. The guys immense I tell ya. If he gets a chance in Austria/Switzerland I'd say he'll be on his way to England.
I just don't think the French are consistent enough to win this EC. That and the squad hasn't been together long.

... Announced on top of Germany's highest mountain...
-Jens Lehmann, Robert Enke, Rene Adler
    - Cristoph Metzelder, Per Mertesacker, Phillip Lahm, Arne Friedrich, Marcell Jansen, Clemens Fritz, Heiko Westermann
    - Michael Ballack, Thomas Hitzlsperger, Simon Rolfes, Torsten Frings, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Piotr Trochowski, Tim Borowski, Jermaine Jones, David Odonkor, Marco Marin
-Miroslav Klose, Lukas Podolski, Mario Gomez, Kevin Kuranyi, Oliver Neuville, Patrick Helmes

...so no Hildebrand or Hanke, and surprise inclusions of Jones and Marin.
I'd question Enke's inclusion at the expense of Hildebrand, and Podolski hasn't played much at all this season.
Then again....with Gomez.... Germany FTW :D

    Sweden's provisional squad
    -Andreas Isaksson,Rami Shaaban,Johan Wiland
    -Mikael Nilsson,Fredrik Stoor,Olof Mellberg,Petter Hansson,Daniel Majstorovic,Andreas Granqvist,Mikael Dorsin

Can't see Holland getting out of group C. Italy followed by France I reckon.
I'm saying fcuk all about Spain cause i always fancy them and they always fcuk it up and lose me money.

My sensible money will be on Italy and Germany(easier draw and hard to beat as usual). With a bit of an outside bet on France or Spain..

Don't count out Portugal, I think they have a really strong squad. Everyone always points out their lack of a striker, but if Scolari can figure out a way to make the team work with Ronaldo up front, they could be sorted. Very solid CB pairing (Carvalho/Pepe), good fullbacks (Miguel/Boswinga), tidy defensive midfielders, dangerous wingers, a little genius of a playmaker, a penalty specialist keeper and Cristiano Ronaldo. They don't have much strength in depth in some areas, but the Euros being a short enough competition I reckon they are in with a great chance.

Yea that looks more like the WC 98 squad cause Owen and Scholes weren't at Euro 96. And Anderton stayed fit long enough to get into the 96 squad, for a change..

Nah that's Euro 2000. McManaman wasn't at Real Madrid in 1998 (or 1996 for that matter), and there's no way Kevin Phillips would be in any other squad except Euro 2000's one.

Here's England's Euro 96 squad, just for the sake of interest:

    Goalkeepers:
    David Seaman
    Tim Flowers
    Ian Walker

    Defenders:
    Tony Adams
    Stuart Pearce
    Gary Neville
    Gareth Southgate
    Steve Howey
    Sol Campbell
    Philip Neville

    Midfielders:
    Darren Anderton
    Jamie Redknapp
    Paul Ince
    Steve McManaman
    David Platt
    Nicky Barmby
    Steve Stone
    Paul Gascoigne

    Strikers:
    Alan Shearer
    Teddy Sheringham
    Robbie Fowler
    Les Ferdinand
