I think Joey Tempest, Don Dokken and Daniel Heiman have the best voices.

Mike Patton is untouchable.Vocals a little tinny on "The Real Thing" (1989) but progressed incredibly on Angel Dust (1992).Incredible range from falsetto to demonic roars...and always note perfect.

Check out the always monumentally unsettling "Jizzlobber"....

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZfr2QMk3Fc

and compare to the rather beautiful "This Guys in Love With You"

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-XzqcP79vQ

    Honourable mentions to....
Layne Staley (fantastic on that quieter Jar Of Flies EP)
Jimbo Morrison (for a guy with no training....whatta voice)
    Tom Araya (no better screamer)

    Billy Corgan!!
Surely he has to be one of the best in the Rock category! He can scream and roar with the best of them and then sing it gently when needed- great range, cant beat him imo anyway!

What about that guy from Shinedown?

This is their version of Simple Man. Does the original justice and more.

Yeah Brent Smith has a great voice, and has an amazing range. Seen Shinedown live a good few times now and have been very impressed every time.

Most of the singers I would have picked have already been mentioned in this thread, but Smith is easily up there with my old favourites, of which most come from the period between the 60's and 90's.

Was at a US show a few years back, and he came out and did a few minutes of songs by Otis Redding, Ray Charles, Soundgarden, and Skynyrd, which was bloody amazing as he sounded perfect for each style he did, and got a great jazz sound to his voice.

The Sound Of Madness tour was brilliant too as he actually sounds better live than on cd.

One of my favourite live moments at a gig, was getting to hear Chris Cornell and Jeff Buckley sing together on stage. Amazing pairing that complimented the other's style so well.

never did listen to metal 'singers'.. Danzig not get a mention here? i think about 20 of the solo songs are really great.. the rest are truly bad. immense voice obviously, radio friendly on the surface but the lyrics were too arcane. the original dark pimp before rob zombie/ manson et al

Samhain's 'November Coming Fire' is a must own. true legacy in punk/metal/goth, even dark blues. and he really is miserable.. which amounts to dedication. edging closer to 60 - a public figure of mirth, but true godfather of the crossgenres encapsulated.

Listening to Zeppelin for the first time in ages and Robert Plant was a brilliant singer. Gotta love his vocals on the old stuff.
