I thought this would be an interesting thread.
Everyone post the name of a little known band, that you think are great, and everyone should hear.

Can be any genre, new or old. Only rule, is that they can't be too well known. Youtube links, if possible would be good too, and only one band per person.

    I'll start.

    Diamond Nights
A great band from New York, sounds like Thin Lizzy, if thin Lizzy were hipster kids with synths and tight jeans. Their best song's Destination Diamonds. Check it out here.

    Time for my favourite folky...

JACKSON C.FRANK (I want to be alone)

He has probably the most down on his luck story. Check out his wiki entry:

The Cardiacs and Black Flag, I guess they're not that obscure but I would hazard that most people don't know them.

They could be well known but I certainly only heard of them recently.

A band called Holy F*ck from Canada who make a dance style of music without any digital equipment. Really liking their 'LP' album...

Similar to LCD Soundsystem but better :)

Really? They seem to be using an awful lot of digital equipment in the song in you posted. Great track though.

Off the top of my head I'm gonna say Santogold. Album is quite good but L.E.S. Artistes & Lights Out are the stand out tracks.

    L.E.S. Artistes

    Lights Out

lol, I see that now... hadn't watched the video. I did read it though somewhere, where though for the life of me can't remember. Worth checking out one way or the other :pac:

Edit - this was what I read from discogs, not quite what I said above but close to what I meant :)
Profile: Holy F*ck are a Toronto-based outfit, with a concept to mimic modern electronic music, without using modern equipment, such as laptops or programmed backing tracks. They record and play (unrehearsed) live with traditional instruments like drums, a bass and keyboards, as well as toy keyboards, guitar peddles, mixers, and even a 35mm film synchronizer.

They have collaborated frequently with Anti Pop Consortium MC, Beans. They've also toured as openers for acts like !!! and Do Make Say Think, amongst many others. They carry a core line-up of Brian Borcherdt, Graham Walsh, Kevin Lynn, and alternating drummers Glenn Milchem and Loel Campbell, while others continue to come in and out of the fold.

Jon Donavan is a folk singer from Scotland, he's fairly well known but mainly for his happy singalong songs- however, he did write some really good protest songs that are much better than any of his soft lovey-dovey stuff- heres a few from his 'Universal Soldier' album:

    'Universal Soldier'
    'Do you hear me now?'
'Freedom I don't want your wings' (could have got the title wrong but thats the main lyric in the chorus)
    'And the war drags on'.

Great tunes, overlooked because they're nothing like his other songs.

Hot Club de Paris, a Liverpool based trio, play upbeat math-rockish indie, new album out soon. They are excellent.

Mark Hollis - ex-lead singer of Talk Talk, made some of the most beautiful music of the '80s and '90s. Such a great voice, and so soulful.

Might be a little too well known, but I just can't help posting. :D

Gentle Giant....they could go from string quartet to medieval madrigal to electronic boogie, often in the same song!

Interesting bit of trivia....Derek Shulman, the lead singer,
"became a prominent record executive, starting as an A&R representative at PolyGram, where he signed Bon Jovi, Cinderella, and Kingdom Come, among others. He has also been president of Atco Records (where he signed the progressive metal band Dream Theater) and also Roadrunner Records."

i'd have to go for the mighty Jackie Leven, former front man of Doll By Doll (another amazingly underrated band, check out their first 3 albums)...Very interesting life and about 20 solo albums under his belt- amazingly consistent back catalogue... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Unw7cLi2_U and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APNVVMp0AF0&feature=related

Are Fujiya & Miyagi too mainstream for this?
Transparent Things is a must have album.
It's what Air would be like if they were brittish... and cool.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,752 ✭✭✭markesmith

el_tiddlero, just downloaded Dan Sartain after listening to Gun & Knife on his MySpace page. Thanks for the recommendation, he's class!

MePhesto, I'm a big fan of Fujiya & Miyagi, especially 'In One Ear...'. I'd say they count, they're under the radar. Should be heard by more people though!

This is a good thread lads, I'm getting some good recommendations...

+1 and +1, but they're fairly well known. Cornsarnit, I might as well mention my two current faves: Jamie T and MIA. Check them out if you haven't heard of 'em, they're both class.
