I'm currently getting very frustrated and struggling with "Animal Antics" on Donkey Kong Country 2. It is the most notoriously difficult level in the game...and I can tell you,it's bloody hard.

It got me thinking though, whats the hardest section of any game you've played?

Turtles on the NES, the level where you had to stop the dam blowing up by diffusing all the bombs underwater.
    Freaking ridiculous.

Most recently the last level of Psychonauts on the Xbox... Never completed the game as a result of that frustrating meat circus level

There are probably harder levels but the first that comes to mind is the racing section in Mafia.

Thats the one where u have to race Hillary to get him todrive the bank job getaway car...

Alma in Ninja Gaiden. I managed to beat her once, sold the xbox soon after :(

In Spiderman 3 there was a bit where you had stand on the front of the train and websling passing girders to slow down the train. However each girder had a button number that you needed to press and it was completely random so you couldn't memorise it, it also went on for like 5 minutes. It was the most furiating thing ever trying to quickly tap buttons as they where promted on the screen, I remember screaming out loud "If I wanted dance dance revolution I would of bought it"

Recently I downloaded "Dark Mist" off PSN... that game is a pure test of endurance and nothing more. Its basically an arcade leaderboard game... I managed to get through the whole 12 levels without losing a life, thus keeping my score intact, only to face the end boss who really is taking the piss in regards to a sudden jump in learning curve. He killed me within a minute, thus resetting my score to zero. Not wanting to quit the game and then have to play through it all again (there's no save points) I decided to just beat him and see the ending. It took me about 40 minutes to get to the final boss then about an hour to defeat him.

Then as a real kick in the nuts the final cutscene is basically a picture with text on top of it... WTH??? I thought those type of endings stopped when we moved away from 8bit games

I like the way you have to beat the guy who's going to be your driver, only proving that you can drive better than he can. A good tactic is to not go all out, stay behind him and learn where he screws up. And if you're feeling annoyed, flying cars cheat

Anything to do with the F-Zero GX story mode.

I never bothered with the story mode of F-zero GX it was just ridiculously tough. Even the normal racing in that game was extremely hard. It made for a wonderfully exciting game though since if you were to get anywhere in the game you had to really take stupid risks just to finish in a good position in the race.

I think Cerberus from Devil May Cry 3 deserves to be ahead of Alma in ninja Gaiden. He was by far the toughest boss in the game and just so happened to be the first one.

There were some really tough levels in Final Fantasy Tactics. The executioners field had me stumped for a good few days.

I think the while of Contra Hard Corps needs a mention that game is ridiculously tough, don't know how I managed to beat it. It a sign of the times when shattered soldier gets slated unfairly for it's difficulty when it's not a patch on Hard Corps which got excellent reviews.

Level 7 of R-type as well is a complete bastard. Think I would have spent a small countries annual GDP in credits to beat it if it wasn't for mame.

The last level in Stuntman comes to my mind. I think I did it once after approximately 100 and something tries, and have been unable to replicate the feat to get 100%.

The triple spinny bit in Ready! Steady! Go! on normal in Ouendan. For some reason I am just physically unable to handle it, and it is about one minute from the end of the game and hence I have yet to unlock hard mode. Urgghh! And I love the game otherwise.

That witch thing in DMC3. One of those bosses where you think you are getting close, only to have her recharge her health fully when she keeps hitting you with a certain move. An exercise in careful manipulation of characters. It is one of the most intense boss fights ever, but once which for me ended in a number of defeats.

It's tough but it's quite manageable compared to a lot of the games in the genre. You should see the last boss of radiant silvergun.

Trauma Cantre for the DS immediately springs to mind. There were some bastard-hard levels in that, but the one I never got past was the one where you have to perform five operations in ten minutes removing those shark/leech things from people. Even without the time limit doing five in a row would be a serious challenge, because the last few patients have about nine of the things to find, and they go critical as soon as you look at them. Doing it all in ten minutes, no chance.

That GDI level in C&C3, where you have to defend a broken down base with limited power and no construction facilites, and then escort an MCV through an enemy-occupied city, gave me a fair bit of trouble as well. Didn't help that I'd patched the game before getting there, and one of the balance fixes in the patch(meant for multiplayer) handicapped the single-player side in such a way as to make that mission about ten times harder. In the end I uninstalled it and reinstalled it clean, and eventually beat it.

I remember not even getting off level one of a shooter called z-out on the atari ST.
Also got stuck on level one of the last ninja 2 for years! finally figured out how to get past the stupid gate and went on to be one of my favourite games ever.
R-type, could never get further than the giant ship level (5?) back in the day.

King K Rool in DK 64 was an absolute bitch.

Also, the boss in Gears of War is really really hard on any mode bar easy. Finished the whole game on insane only to have to drop down twice to beat her

  • Registered Users Posts: 68,317 ✭✭✭✭seamus

Can't remember if it was C&C Generals or Zero Hour, but one of the China missions was a complete bitch. I think it took about 4 hours to finish in the end, after I'd already been annihilated 3 times.

Basically you get a tiny corner of the map with no buildings and pretty limited resources. The GLA have populated most of the rest of the map and have multiple vehicle and infantry factories, as well as a superweapon powering up. There is only one way to get to your area, but the onslaught is constant with suicide bombers and rocket buggies.

I discovered that basically the only way to defend yourself was to maintain a constant napalm fire at the entrance to your base while you build 2 or 3 nukes, then you cripple them one base at a time and send in your vehicles to clean it up.

    Took me bleeding ages.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2

Playing 4 player Co-op was so hard on that game, Theres a level with jungle and cliffs everywhere, and you get taken out one by one. I think its much harder with more players on Co-op, the enemy's come from everywhere, and were all panicking and trying to fight them off.

    Level 3 of 8 I'm afraid. You've a bit longer to go :)

Forgot about Ready Steady Go in Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan! with the cheerleaders. I totally ruined my DS screen because of that game. I had what i think is my first and only controller tantrum on that song and threw the stylus against the wall and broke the tip off. I was on holidays so couldn't get a new one and I was determined to beat the level so had to continue on with the stylus without the soft tip :)

I loved that bomb.defusal in turtles! Could do it fair easy after a while.

    I want to say summet from NG but looking back it was just challending rather than hard {bought a 360 and didnt get around to finishing it...maybe when i get NG2 I might start again}

Cant think of anything else off the top of my head.

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,707 ✭✭✭✭K.O.Kiki

    The opening level of Driver.

You don't want me to play you if I can't beat your timed "training" level? Ok, back to the store for you!

Alma is tough, but NOTHING compared to Muro. it took about 30 tries to defeat him the first time 'round

krogoth encounter in total annihilation was tough enough at first.

and yeah, f-zero gx story mode was f**kin tough

Basically NG for Xbox was soo annoying but once you get the hang of the system it's a lot easier. The missions on NG Black are also ridiculous! Nicchae + Ishtaros together? soo bloody hard! Last Report for PS1? just don't get that game.. Bubsy 3D was also so annoying, remember my friend screaming his head off at it plenty of times. Dunno if it was because we were young and didn't know what to do.. but sure it was funny.

More likely to do with the fact that it's arguably the worst game ever made.
