This is either misleading or the vendor does'nt understand the new tax rules.

Don't normally like anything to do with SIMI, but this is pretty spot on.

I thought the S2000, RX-8 and hi power TT would get a reprieve, but since they will be introducing the CO2-based system for all imports above 225g/km, new or 2nd hand in July all these cars are going to incur €2000 road tax a year while they're all currently €500-€600.

    Not this again.

    It's simply untrue.

They WILL be taxed on engine size only if they were first registered outside this country before 1/1/08, even if they're imported after July. The SIMI is misleading the public(and not for the first time).

I quoted this earlier on this thread:

The Government announced what I'm after saying back in early March btw, and the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government have the following on this page:
Q:What about cars registered before January 2008?
A:Cars registered before 2008, including impots, will continue to be taxed in future years under the existing motor tax system related to engine size. (c.c)

Q: I am thinking of buying an imported used
car after July, how will the new Road Tax
    system affect me?

a: Imported cars first registered in previous country before
the 1st January 2008 will be Road Taxed at current rates
except those with emissions more over 225g/km which will
be taxed on a CO2 basis (currently €2,000).

You are saying this is wrong?

    :D Hands Up!

    I was WRONG!

    I have been educated!

The when I first read the finance bill it stated that the VRT and road would be based on CO2 Emissions.

Thanks lads for the info and apolagises to Mr. Irish for stating that he was clueless on tax. :D

Learned something new today, it ****ed up my plans now, I was going to import a 06 Honda Accord 2.2 i-CDTI from England later this summer, as I thought that the tax would be really cheap. Rip off country.

Agreed..its a rip off country. Awful place to live with regard to the cost of living and motoring.
    Apology accepted..........lets move on.........as i have!
    :pac:

You, half the country and their ma...
Why do you think the pricks changed the system? Can't have everyone getting cheap sh*t and depriving vested interests (in this case Revenue themselves) of income now can we?

This looks wrong. I've checked the Revenue's site and I was in the Santry VRT office on Tuesday who had a booklet there that I had plenty of time to read. Neither of which mention(ed) the above. Perhaps SIMI themselves got confused?

Don't fix something if it's not broken.

An expression the government obviously never heard of.

i thought i actually understood what was going on.... darn. I thought pre08 imports would be liable for 2k tax if they were over 225g/km. Apparently not (brilliantly)
