It's technically true but misleading to say Tevez cost £10 Million. That is all Utd have paid so far, but he is still on loan. They will have to pay at least another £10 million (up to another £20 million according to reports at the time of the loan deal) to keep him.

    link
(the conservative valuation is manc propaganda :D )

With the way Utd in particular structure their deals in terms of amount up front plus additional clauses it makes it hard to judge just how much their players cost. I'm sure they have had to cough up a lot of extra cash this season after winning the Prem and CL because of these clauses.
True, but that 20M or whatever it is will be added when the deal is made permanent.

I accept the point about Torres and Garcia, a mistake was done there. Sp how much cash did Liverpool pay for Torres? 20M?

I was asked who I thought would be a better option than Barry.

I wasn't trying to be snide or anything.
    Just stating the facts.

Each of those players would more than likely take time to adjust to the premiership, and for the most part are past their peak.

With some we'd only get two years out of them, and that would inclide maybe the full year of adjusting.

Barry is 27-8 he has at least 4 years left at a high level.
    He'll take no time adjusting.
    He's consistant.
    He's much more adaptable.
He can play in 5 positions.

He's just the nbetter option IMO.
    And in a few others.
And most importantly I guess, Rafa's.

If you put 10 of the world 11 in a side with Salif Diao they'd win the prem, that doesn't make him title winning standard. Just because a player is in a side that wins things does not make him a great player

Sure Djimi Traore has a champions league medal. :pac:

Keane would be a great improvement as our 2nd striker, I like this idea. I can see the summer ending without us adding quality on the wings. However with Torres, Babel and Keane as our front three with Gerrard behind them, and a more attacking choice with fullbacks. Both fullbacks bombing on with 2 holding midfielders in front of the central defenders, this at the moment looks like Rafas plan. Going forward, our fullbacks contributed next to nothing last season.

Unless he pulls another Babel type signing out of the bag, I know alot here are talking up Silva, but his performances with Spain were not good, looks like he'd have trouble adjusting to the premiership where he'd get less time and space than in Spain.

Villa? who ballague says will go for about 45m euros?

go and ****e, Keane and Barry would be excellent purchases, both proven PL excellent players who will immediately make us better if they maintain the standards they showed with weak/weaker teams, if they improve (players do that you know!) skies the limit imo.
You keep saying that Dossena was left back of the year in Italy. Where are you getting it from ? Its not true.

    Miss this ?

Not sure about Keane tbh, he's a quality player but where would he play? In Gerrard's role, with Gerrard moving out wide? As a second striker, with Gerrard dropping deeper? Or out wide, in a Kuyt/Babel role? These are all options, but none look ideal to me.

    Fair enough.

Lucas's nickname in Brazil was "the Brazilian Gerrard", so that should give you an idea.

He's a box to box type player.

He's also a great passer of the ball.
Meant to have a real gift for picking out the simple effective pass.

wat are you talking about, the vast majority of Liverpools matches were on the telly, right until the end of the season.

Oh sorry, just realised that was actually a trolly comment to say we were out of the title race. nicely played.

I could think of one for nothing. Alonso. Dont quite get why he is being replaced in the first place unless there is something we dont know and he really wants to leave.

You don't get why he is being replaced?

He is an immense talent that hasn't played to anywhere near his ability for 2 seasons. Rafa has obviously run out of patience with him.

Unfortunately, I'd be willing to bet alot of money that both Villa and Silva will now be staying at Valencia... Good for the Spanish league, but it would have been nice to see if they could elevate Liverpool to perhaps a league title!

Best left back in the league according to his agent! If you search serie a team of the season 07/08 in google, you get lots of different variations of teams from different pundits and websites. He is not in any of them. Im not saying he is no good. Im pretty excited to see him play. Just pointing out that he wasnt LB of the year.

Well imo Liverpool would be better off spending the £18 million on areas that need more addressing such as top class winger, cover for Torres, etc. Alonso has been unlucky with injuries this year and who knows with a full pre season behind him it is very possible for him to recapture the form he showed in his first season. I would have thought he deserves that chance especially when you consider how much Barry is going to cost.

Liverpool have launched a surprise move to sign Tottenham striker Robbie Keane - but may be priced out of a deal for the Republic of Ireland star.
Spurs boss Juande Ramos is an admirer of Liverpool forward Peter Crouch and Anfield boss Rafael Benitez is happy to make him part of an exchange deal.
BBC Sport understands Liverpool would be willing to offer Crouch plus cash to sign 28-year-old Keane.
But they fear Spurs will demand £20m for Keane, wrecking a possible deal.
Liverpool's transfer plans are currently focused on concluding the protracted and acrimonious pursuit of Aston Villa captain Gareth Barry.
Barry has publicly stated his desire to move to Liverpool - and while Villa boss Martin O'Neill admits he is willing to do business, the current price tag of at least £18m is out of Liverpool's reach.

    606: DEBATE

Benitez's interest in Keane is an unexpected development but, with Crouch likely to go and Portsmouth still his most likely destination and Andriy Voronin struggling to make an impact, he is seen as an ideal partner for Spain's Euro 2008 hero Fernando Torres.
Keane is under contract with Spurs until 2010 and was an influential figure last season, scoring 23 goals in a campaign that was capped by the Carling Cup going to White Hart Lane - and Liverpool's move will receive no encouragement.
But reports suggest Keane may be tempted to make the switch by the lure of playing Champions League football at Liverpool, the club he supported as a boy.
He joined Tottenham from Leeds for £7m in August 2002 and has also played for Wolves, Coventry and Inter Milan
Liverpool, meanwhile, may have to wait until European champion Xabi Alonso returns from holiday before they can sort out the Spanish midfielder's future.
Alonso is on a three-week break after being part of Spain's successful Euro 2008 squad, leaving a possible £16m move to Juventus in limbo and boss Benitez waiting to discover if he will get a fresh injection of transfer funds.

Mauricio Pellegrino is a born winner says Rafa BenitezRAFA BENITEZ today declared he has added "a winner" to his Anfield coaching staff with the appointment of Argentine defender Mauricio Pellegrino.

The 36-year-old centre-back had an undistinguished spell as a player with the Reds in 2005, making just 12 appearances before returning to Spain.

But boss Benitez believes Pellegrino’s coaching skills will prove invaluable as he has now filled the vacancies created by the departures of Pako Ayesteran and Alex Miller.

“He is a winner,” said Benitez. “That is the most important thing. “He is very, very competitive and has a very good mentality.

“When I first arrived at Valencia he was fantastic. He was always talking to the other defenders, organising them and offering advice to the younger players about the strikers they would be facing.

“Last season he worked as a coach at Valencia and I think he can become a very good coach here at Liverpool.

“We now have two former players on the backroom staff and that will be important.”

Pellegrino is still studying for his UEFA pro licence but is set to complete the course in the next fortnight.

Benitez added: “His role will be first-team coach, and he’ll also carry out specialist training sessions.

“He can also work specifically with the defence, and also the reserves.

“He has a lot of passion. When I asked him to come he was very pleased, but first he wanted to find out if there was a school where his three children could play good football. He is a football man!”

Benitez, meanwhile, does not expect to see Euro 2008 hero Fernando Torres for a few weeks after his Vienna heroics – but he added his voice to the chorus of tributes to the Spanish striker.

“I am really pleased for him and the rest of the Spain squad,” he said.

“Everyone will know now why we are signing Spanish players!

“I am very proud, especially after he has been criticised from some journalists in Spain.

“Everyone remembers the Marcelino goal from 44 years ago, and the last final Spain were in was 24 years ago.

“Now people will talk about Torres in the same way.”

More than just a coach then.

Did Torres "blow you away" in the world cup in 2006?

    He had a good tounament.
Just like Silva did this time.
He was playing as part of a front three with Villa and Torres, and his runs of the ball created space for them.
He was fairly flat in the final, cause he was playing as an out and out winger as apposed to his perferred forward role.

He didn't blow me away, but he showed a lot of potential.
    And belief.

None of them blew me away, they are all good players though. You cant judge someone solely on their form in an international tournament that is at maximum, 6 games. Judge them on their form for their club. Silva has been excellent for Valencia.

People are definitely giving Silva a hard time because of Dunphy's overtly critical bashings... He had a solid tournament, and showed a couple of glimpses... Watch him be a key figure in Valencia's rise back to the highest tier of the Liga now..

I was impressed by Torres in the WC, thought he had great potential. I thought Silva was poor in the Euro's, I don't think he's a bad player but he probably won't be cheap and imo is not worth the money we could pay for him. He actually reminded me of Garcia alot

I doubt that most listen to Dunphy tbh, looking at it though the guy is only 22 so your probably right, he gave the ball away cheaply a bit but could still improve alot, he's a risk though, I trust Rafa to know whether to take the gamble, he usually doesn't part with good money easily

I specifically stated that if you wanted to post about the transfer budgets question, make a bloody seperate thread.

If you do it, or something like that again, I will ban you. Consider this a warning. Make a new thread, and keep this one for general discussion.

Just to add my dissapointed in this thread.

The problem is we have non-liverpool supporters, who admitteldly don't watch Liverpool that often come in an regurgiatate the same stories over and over again.

It's extrememly difficuly to even attempt debating with someone who doesn't even know what position half the team play...

And it's no point ignoring some people, because the last time I opened a page of 40 posts, 16 of them were ignored, while 7 of them quoted those who I ignored...

Some people's obsession with Liverpool is only with their fans, and not the team (otherwise they'd know Lucas isn't a DMC)

    Bit sad really

I'll probably be staying out of this thread for the next few weeks, it's no longer useful.

On something else that has been done to death but has gone deathly silent...

DIC seem to have vanished - after all of the talk of them agreeing to buy Gillets 50% and anouncments due in days things have tailed off. With that, the work starting on the new ground and the reported easing of communication bewteen the new owners it looks like we may be stuck with them for a while. Unless there has been something I've missed?
