Is 40 euro/square metre very expensive for floor tiles? We want to tile our kithen, this is our first home so we really are complete novices at this. We've had a look in BTW (they didn't have anything we liked), B&Q (had a tiny selection). The Tilestyle showroom is amazing and we saw tiles we really liked, they are 54 euro/sqm but they have a sale on making them 40 euro/sqm. We were in the Dublin Tile and bathroom centre this morning and saw tiles which are just ok for the same price (they're porcelain).

We're really not that fussy, we want dark tiles (not flat black) that are 30cm x30cm because our kitchen is only 9sq metres. Can anybody help? Where should we be looking and how much should we be paying for floor tiles?

We are in the same boat as you, we paid €27 a square yard for polished porcelain floor tiles. It will all depend on what you can afford I think you should come up with a figure of what you want to spend and then divide that by your floor size and then you will know your options. You should shop around you will find that there is still room for a bargaining even if they have been reduced, we managed to get our down from €30 to €27 may not seem like a lot but it all adds up in the end.

If you like them and can afford them, then they're not *that* expensive. In general though, you can get tiles a lot cheaper than that.

Keep shopping, there are plenty of places about and plenty of different types and quality of tiles to be bought. And don't be codded by "sales" - there are always sales on in places, and they can't have sale prices all year now, can they?

Don't know if this is too late for you now:) but I'm looking for tiles for our bathrooms and was up in Nationwide Tiles today and they have 50% off all their floor and wall tiles for June. Seems good value to me!
