Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

England goalkeeping crisis?

Whatever about Trapattoni calling up Westwood from Carlisle, is there really such a dearth of English goalkeepers that Capello has to resort to calling up a player just promoted from League Two?
    Posh keeper given England call-up

England coach Fabio Capello has brought Peterborough goalkeeper Joe Lewis into his squad after Chris Kirkland returned to Wigan due to a back injury.

The Football Association said Kirkland looks set to miss Wednesday's friendly against the United States after having muscle spasms in his back.

Lewis and Peterborough won promotion to League One this season.

The 20-year-old became Peterborough's record signing in January when he signed for £400,000 from Norwich.

"This is fantastic news for Joe and Peterborough United," Peterborough director of football Barry Fry told the club's official website.

"It will be a fantastic experience for him."

If Lewis makes his debut, he will join a small group of players including Johnny Byrne, Peter Taylor and Steve Bull who have played for England while plying their trade outside the top two divisions.

Looks like they really need Almunia to declare for them as soon as he's eligible in December.

Carson, Robinson, Foster, James - one of them must be fit! :pac:

    Mike.

If they were so desperate, Steve Harper would have been a great man for a callup. He ahs been super any time he has filled in for Shay, and in his recent run of games, he has been solid as a rock.

True enough - he never gets mentioned does he?

    Mike.

Yeah, Harper has always been solid and yet I've never heard him mentioned as a possible England player.

What about Steve Simonsen of Stoke City?
Or even Nicky Weaver of Charlton?
    Kelvin Davis?
Surely they aren't that desperate to overlook a lot of solid Championship Goalkeepers

    Is Green injured too?

Surely Capello could convince Cudicini to declare if desperate.

Id say Westwood at Carlisle could do a job for them, looked impressive against Leeds.

Did Cudicini not refuse to play for England a few years ago?

Surely CItys Joe Hart would be in line before some League 2 keeper.

re Aluminia, dont you have to gain a passport in an adopted country before age 20 to be eligible (except for granny rulers).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,909 ✭✭✭✭Xavi6

Joe Hart is all they need. Along with James he's the most in form English keeper.

Joe Lewis is a brilliant goalkeeper and all us Norwich fans were disgusted at him being sold to Posh. Greeno is on holidays doing a 3 week trek in Africa so he was unavailable for the friendly.

Edit: And he's a League 1 goalkeeper now.

Hart and James are the other two keepers in the squad.

Don't know what the exact rules are now, but Almunia apparently qualifies for a British passport on December 29th, unless Spain call him up in the meantime.

Nope. Merely have to be resident in the UK 5 years and (obviously) to not have played a full international for your 'original' national side.

Frankly I'd love to go back to a time when you could pretty much play for anyone. Di Stefano played for Spain, Argentina and Colombia during his career. Puskas for Hungary and Spain. Kubala for Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Spain. Be hilarious to see sh*t like that happening now.

Altho maybe that's just cos I couldn't give much of a f**k about international football tbh.

    ALMUNIA FOR ENGLAND:D

Whatever about current injuries, England have a shedload of decent keepers. James, Robinson, Hart, Foster, Green, Carson, Harper, Kirkland etc. They do need someone to step up to become clear first choice (James has done that this season, but he's getting on - it'll probably be Foster by 2010), but the need to resort to calling up random Championship keepers is not a long-term issue.

I really don't see the problem. Previous England manager's were criticised for not picking players who were on fire in the lower leagues, Andy Johnson being a prime example. Now Capello is thinking outside the box, proving there's more to life than the Premiership, and there's criticism. The mind boggles.

Is there a valid reason as to why he should not be picked?

    No,hes a very good keeper

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,198 ✭✭✭kensutz

Joe Lewis has also played for England at every underage level. We get some cash if he makes an appearance which is unlikely but good to see him get the call up. I know him from going to away matches with him and Man United were rumoured to be looking at him.

EDIT: Damn, I really should have looked before I said that.

the english manager will be critized no matter what he does, IF england were to win the world cup, the press would still give him hassle in the next friendly.

calling up Lewis says two things, the first to lower league players that you dont have to be in the prem to get a call up if you;re good enough and secondly to the prem players that just because they play in the prem they dont deserve a call up. Everyone earns their plasce. Fair play to Capello.

There's no crisis at all,it's only friendlies!

Isnt James an auto choice for teh moment? in good form. surely Cappelo just has to sort cover? what about Gordon (Sunderland keeper) is he english? seems godd enuff to be given a try out.

Alumina has'nt impressed at all any time i've seen him play for Arsenal. ppl seem to think hes good but I feel hes hugely overrated. If Aresnal arent looking for a top line replacement in goal, its 3rd place again next yr.

Why all this talk about Alumina? there are 5 or 6 English goalkeepers better than him. If he was 19 then I could understnd the fuss, but he's no spring chicken. Most of the noise is made by Arsenal fans who are desperate to have an English player at the Emirates :D

It's only a friendly, what's the point of having them if you don't experiment a bit. I would guess Capello hasn't seen a lot of league one football so it gives him a chance to take a look at a player with a growing reputation.

england are FAR from a goalkeeping crisis!! just because they do not have the resources of a country like spain for example doesnt mean they have a crisis. robinson. carson. james. foster. green. kirkland. off the top of my head, not to mention cuducini if the italian coach wanst him or almunia. even richard wright is around somewhere and stuart taylor is english and had premiership experience and also harper...

oh yeah, some crisis!!! thats 11 premiership goalies, oooh what a problem!!

    lock thread now plz mods.....

haha, i even forgot about joe hart..haha, the crisis gets even worse!! if thats a crisis then omg they are screwed for centre backs. uh oh. better start a thread concerning englands shortage of premiership centre backs cos im pretty sure they do not have 11 cover centre backs for each of the two starting berths..maybe they should look at changin formations to counter this lack of cover!!! lol

A scottish goalkeeper being touted for England, maybe we do have a crisis, or something is wrong with the natural order of things.;)

Its a joke Green hasn't been given a chance. Hes young and very reliable, great under pressure and great at peno's.

Don't agree with you saying he's very reliable. That's Green's one weak point. His decision making at times is some what dreadful. If he could clean that up he will be England's number one for years to come.

Chris Kirkland- Always thought he was very good, pretty sure he's injured tho

Obviously haven't followed his record prior to this season.

Yep, Lewis was called up as cover when Kirkland pulled out of the squad with an injury

If a player is improving they go by now not the past. Im sure if hes given a chance he would prove atleast he deserved to be in the squad.
