Is your NTL cable modem connected direct to PS3 or is it connected through the extra Netgear router?
You can't do anything with ports or the like with the NTL cable modem AFAIK.

I you are connecting directly to modem, the ports do not need to be opened, as they are already all open. Ports are a method routers use to shape and direct internet traffic through multiple users of the same IP range. Its a method of splitting the connection, hence the necessity of a router when there are several simultaneous users of the internet connection.
