OpenSUSE 10.3. 11.0 is out soon, might give it a whirl...

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

Gentoo's portage system is pretty kewl. Might give Gentoo another try.
I used FreeBSD for a while and the ports is the only thing I miss.
Messing around with makefiles of apps that become "stagnant" is a tad annoying at times though.

Ubuntu here atm - only using it a year and it was easiest. Gonna rebuild my laptop soon and when I do I'll probably try out Fedora and/or Suse - at the very least in a VM. Desktop is Ubuntu and staying that way - it works so no need to break it. And building a HTPC also - that'll be MythBuntu.

ROFL - just saw OpenVMS in the poll. I maintain some OpenVMS servers in work - most stable servers we have. But not exactly ready for the average desktop user :D

I'm surprised no one has mentioned PCLinux OS It's consistently in the top 5 at Distrowatch. I've read good feedback about it. I'm using Ubuntu, but I'm going to switch soon. Just getting too comfortable with Ubuntu, and I preferred the look and feel of the earlier versions.

I recently upgraded the laptop to Hardy. Gonna try another distro definitely - not mad on Hardy tbh. Particularly FF beta 3 - not the beta itself but the fact that it uses Wine!

    Ubuntu 8.04 dual booter.

I love the Compiz cube and the water effects.

I hear a lot of good things said about Fedora, so might give that a whirl with the USB drive thingy.

Being using it since 1999 find it hard to switch
config files seems to be in different places on other distros.

Crap, how could I forget Arch >_<
Apparently, Arch is the new Slack:pac:
Pacman also has dependency resolution which is nice.

    Clearly commented rc scripts ftw!
You will find moving easier than someone who hasn't used Linux
    at least:)

Lol, yeah, they're so paranoid, they can't even tell us the features it'll have: http://paranoidlinux.org/content/overview :D
Seriously though, they can forget about using SE Linux, the NSA helped to develop it.

It's the other way around - config files are in different places on Red Hat.

Played with several distro's before settling with ubuntu.
Can't be arsed to keep changing anymore, just use virtualbox and add them in.

    Thats impressive fir ubuntu.

I really think they need to work on the appearance of the desktop though. I think it looks crappy.

Ibex looks like this at the moment. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3128/2584009291_72eaae143b_b.jpg . Its still quite dark though.

    Sure we'll see!

Gotta agree here. Have been using Ubuntu since Hoary but change the theme to a blue one. I hate the brown / orange.

Then you dislike the Gnome desktop environment and Ubuntu's default theme, which is part of Gnome.

Consider looking at E17, Xfce or KDE to see what they have to offer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,227 ✭✭✭stereo_steve

No I like Gnome the best. Just don't like the colour scheme they use. I'm currently using the theme from ubuntu studio which i think is fine but I saw this as a propose desktop which I like.

Cremo, I also use Solaris 8/9/10 and suse in work! Wonder if its the same place?! It wouldn't be Swedish company would it?!
