I wish I had lecturers this cool...

Still, more like this must be said to promote the maturing of video games art. Enough with the shooty-shooty, give me some emotion.

Excellently put together, but i'm surprised he didn't mention in the intimacy part about Half Life with Alex, because thats the closest i've seen video games get to real emotional intimacy, even though not much happened.

sex doesn't belong in games, porn takes care of that quite nicely

Why doesn't it belong? There's no reason why sex can't be part of a game, like the man said it's enhanced plenty of films greatly by its inclusion, why can't it be done with games too?

Anyway, that was ten minutes well spent.

I'm often disappointed by developers who spend more time getting the physics of bouncing breasts right than spending time on things like story, gameplay mechanics, or any other of the features that are important for making a game good. I always thought Tomb Raider was an absolutely rubbish game that only really sold because the protagonist had short shorts and what I can only assume were beachballs attached to her chest.

Half Life 2 has been great for emotional content so far. Not just Alyx, HL2 made me feel for Barney Calhoun, and Eli Vance, and even Dr. Breen. I genuinely wanted to make sure some of these guys survived, and
I was genuinely dismayed by the death of Eli in Episode 2, only then realising how much Valve had cunningly made me care about him
. But I suppose people will concentrate most on Alyx, because, well, gamers have a certain majority demographic after all. Let's ignore for the moment that Alyx was designed to look rather attractive. She's not just a pair of polygonal breasts with an accurate automatic handgun. They gave Alyx a background, some natural, convincing dialogue and body language, and relative independence from the player. They gave her some great other characters to relate to, antagonise and care about. The main characters in HL2 have been really fleshed out to a degree most other games never bother with.

Perhaps most of all though, they spent a lot of time coding Alyx's behaviour so she didn't act like a complete dipstick. She got out of your way and tended to STAY there. she (almost?) never shot me in the back unless I stupidly jumped into her line of fire. She always kept of of MY line of fire. She (and to a lesser extent Barney) was the first ally in a FPS I didn't loathe being teamed up with. I was glad she was there, because she HELPED. Pretty much every other AI ally I've had in any other shooter has been a liability to me, but not Alyx. And it's mostly because of that I think that I found myself giving a damn about what happened her. She could be the most well-thought out complete character in the world, but if she couldn't handle herself in a fight without constant attention from you, you'd quickly end up hating her guts.

And yes, she's not exactly hard to look at either.
