I hate doing this because I'm sure the staff are doing their best etc but dont ever go to eat in the Gateway Restaraunt which is down a lane off West Street.

I made the mistake of doing so today and I'm just disgusted with myself for not going to Bizou where I had intended on going.

Just had scampi and chips and my girlfriend had southern fried rubber no I mean southern fried chicken and chips. I wont go into too much detail of how horrible the food was but will just say that cooking food so that it is palatable and tastes nice is relatively easy and to f*ck it up and make it taste sh*t is alot harder to do.

I cant stop thinking of all of the lovely things I could have got for my €15.70 for example a take away from Rupee later. If I had to rate this place in terms of stars 1-5 I honestly wouldn't give them any.

When we were leaving the girl said ' Thanks and see you again' and I was just thinking ye you might bump into me in the bank or post office or on the street but you certainly wont see me in here again.

I was last there about a year ago and the food was horrendous. Sounds like it never changed. Microwaved left overs is what it appears to be.

On a side note, if anyone goes here just to see if our reviews check out or to experience the "Worst restaurant in town" dont bring your kids. Mine were very sick after it.

Does anyone else think the ESB&G could do with an overhaul of the menu? I'm a regular customer and I'm getting slightly bored with the options. I'd love to see some of their specials become regulars on the menu. I'd suggest it on their FB page but I'd probably be eaten alive. They're very defensive.:D

I used to love going in there for the cheap but decent breakfasts, but then I went to Bizou one day and it just blew it out of the water, in terms of value and quality. Don't know if I could go back now :(

Tried the ESB a few days ago for the first time; really, really loved everything about it.

    Burger.

My driving instructor had told me that it was phenomenal. Usually I'm not a burger person but I loved it (even if it was a bit messy) :P

Sola Bia in Slane closed at the w/end. Disappointing for the owners... nice food at a reasonable price!
High Rents again seem to be the root cause behind another promising business failing.

Tried it for Sunday lunch the first weekend it opened. The place is very nice we had a table looking over the town, after that things not so good we were both disappointed with the food given the prices.I had thai fish cakes to start which were tiny and over cooked, the burger and blue cheese was tasteless.
And before you ask yes we did complain ,they did not charge for the starter and gave us two glasses of wine by way of an apology, fair enough.
The following week the OH and friend had lunch there, eventually, thirty mins before they were served and it was not busy.Hope it improves.

Can you be more specific on the prices?

I'm sure their breakfast is class and I actually said that to my missus when we left that I'd say their fry up is second to none. Unfortunately I will never know now !

WARNING- this is not a drogheda review, but bettystown. As both areas are very near each other, I'm posting in drogheda reviews as personally, I eat in both localities. I know not everyone likes that so I'm warning you first...... :)

Finally, they have done something with the old neptune hotel. The pub recently closed down but I hear that's meant to reopen.

Sienna opened up a few weeks ago as a "cafe, bar, restaurant". I live in bettystown and we really lack a decent bar so was delighted to here this. Last week we went down for a drink but it's not a bar. It s a restaurant. We got a bottle of wine in anyway (we had already eaten). Place is nice and big, overlooking the sea. Some great views.

We tried it last night for food. About 6 people there so got a table no bother. It's an Italian restaurant. Had pork ribs and calamari to start. Ribs were lovely in a nice BBQ sauce. I wasn't keen on the calamari but my partner loved them. Partner then had steak with chips. Steak was fab, cooked perfectly. Chips great. I heard (could be wrong) that the owners of the local chipper took it over, the chips were chipper chips so it could be true. I had a pasta dish with chicken / cream / mushroom. Very tasty.

Didn't have dessert. The menu had pictures of the desserts and that reminds me of Chinese desserts which I never like as I think they are frozen. Had two coffees.

Overall food was great, music was good (Italian vibe). Menu has lots of choice between traditional Italian of pasta and pizza and other dishes. Location great. BUT, I found it on the expensive side. Two starters, two mains, two coffees and a bottle of wine for €80. I would like to see early bird type offers. I would definitely go back. I really hope it does well as we need another good restaurant in bettystown. I find relish is just too small. I hope a new bar opens up soon as we are lacking one!

Thanks for the review am planning to go there for dinner this week. I agree re the prices I thought the A La Carte looked dear but I guess if its only a once in a while treat not too bad. I did ask him ( the owner?) on Sat was he doing an early bird and he said not for the moment.

Can recommend this place for breakfast tried it on Saturday really nice fresh brekkie with toast/tea/coffee. On average around 3 euro cheaper per person than either of the other places nearby. I hope he does well, good to have a variety in the village.

I was in "Simona's" across the road from Scotch Hall during the week and noticed the pizza chef from "La Pizzeria" behind the counter. Apparently he's friends with the couple who run it and does a bit here and there for them. I've not seen many reviews for this place which surprises me as it's a really tremendous café. Delicious Italian food, generous portions, extremely friendly service and excellent coffee.

Does Drogheda have a fine dine restaurant ? I mean somewhere that is working towards michellin star, not esb or anything like that.

Or is there a restaurant that specialises in fish ? I've lived here almost 4 years and have come across neither. If there is no fish restaurant I find it strange considering the coastal location, drogheda port and proximity to clogherhead and annagassan etc.

No & no. It's not strange, Drogheda could not support a Michelin rated restaurant and never will. As a commuter town there is no connection with local business of any type in the centre of town. All our best fish goes to Spain & France where they get best prices.
Drogheda port takes imports; Clogherhead is just a satellite market for Europe; after a storm pick up prawns & crab on Annagassan beach.
There's not much else out there.

I knew there were no restaurants with a michelin star already in Drogheda but I asked if there were any who were aspiring to get one. The majority of posters on here refer to Eastern Seaboard Bar&Grill as the best restaurant they've ever eaten in and I agree it is nice but there are far nicer out there.

I think there is space for such a restaurant. All the best fish may go to Spain & France but surely if a local restaurant were willing to buy it would be made available. If it was done right, by the right people, in the right location, I reckon it would survive.

The only restaurant in drogheda that would be even close to Michelin star would be http://www.scholarshotel.com/ and even then it's fare while nice would not be refined enough.

Its not only refinement, it's pricing, compare Locks Brasserie which was recently was awarded a Michelin Star, they offer 2 course for €22.

The above on pricing is an issue for a lot of Restaurants in Drogheda. Just look at Matthews coach on a Friday or Saturday night going into Dublin, a lot people going out to eat. Ok much larger choice in Dublin, but a comment people make is the cost, even factoring in getting the Bus.
