Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Driving to Australia

    Hi all,

Weer 3 guys mid 20's leaving from Ireland in mid August, and driving to Australia and a seat has just become available in our roomy Toyota Landcrusier. The route will take us (and you) through Europe, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, India, SE Asia, Indonesia and on to Australia hopefully before Christmas, although Christmass in Bali might be nice aswell.... Its the trip of a lifetime and open to anyone who'se up for it. You don't need a driving licence or be a mechanic but you do need a big sense of adventure.

we are very easy going lads up for the crack and seeing and experiencing everything we can along the way. I know its short notice but if this sounds like your cup of tea we'd love to hear from you,
    email me at pearlandarchie@gmail.com

    Cheers
    Jimmy

Sounds like a cool idea but if you are planning on going from India to South East Asia you may have difficulty due to the fact that Burma lies right in your way. Also Singapore isn't connected to Indonesia and Indonesia isn't connected to Australia. Indonesia is an archipelago and you'll be getting lots of car ferries. Also i remember reading before that there are no ferry's between Indonesia and Australia.

Also have you looked into bringing a foreign car into the countries you plan on going through? Certain countries can create a load of hassle. Especially with having to get new insurance for each country and also the fact that you can't prove you will exit the country before your visa expires. It created problems for me in Central America which is usually pretty lax on the visa issue. But once you've a car you become suspicious.

I'm not trying to put a dampner on things. Just mentioning them in case you overlooked them. Sounds like a great plan and i'd hate for you's to experience hassle along the way without being prepared.

Yip. been planning this for a few years now realy so know the geography fairly well at this stage. apart from Indonesia the jeep will be shipped rather than ferried across and bringing a vehical into different countrys is done with a vehical passport. it has to be stamped on entering and exiting the country
    thanks for the message

You learn something new everyday. I'd never heard of a vehicle passport before.

How are you planning on going through Burma? I had read answers to a question over on that thorntree forum from someone looking to go overland from France to Vietnam and a load of people were telling them they'd have to go up through Russia rather than through Iran, Pakistan, India, etc because Burma and Tibet are off limits to foreigners at present. I'll be going the opposite way at some stage and just curious if you've come across a way around it.

    Very interested in this!
Just wondering how much you are budgeting for it though?
How much are you expecting it to cost in total?
    Cheers!

shur we can always leave from glenamaddy, hear its lovly this time of the year.....

would be happy to give a fairly detailed breakdown of all the costs if anyone wants to email me at pearlandarchie@gmail.com and any other info anyone might be looking for.
Burma's an intresting one alright and the situation there's changing every day but theres plenty of options including shipping from Calcuta to SE Asia or even OZ if it comes to it.
I know it sounds like a big deal but if anyone is intrested weed realy love to hear from you

Burma might be the least of your worries, I'd say by the time you are in Asia later this year the restrictions on foreigners will be lifted.

Your real problem will be driving from Iran to Pakistan, you do know anywhere east of Bam in Iran is serious heroin smuggling territory? Its a lawless part of the land and without an army escort is quite a dangerous journey.

Also you might want to take a look at www.crazyjourney.com these Irish lads are nearly home after doing something similar for chariteeee

Ya we've been keeping a close eye on the crazy journey lads. im hoping we wont draw as much attention as a big black hummer driving through the desert.

That area is a bit lawless alright but its a well travelled route and escorts can be got if needed

Good site, very detailed, came across it a few months ago. they went through russia and china before heading down into laos.
Possibly a bit safer but china would be a nightmare to get through with red tape and paper work. I think Iran/Packistan/India would be more intresting
