I know the area well and am seeing lots of magical boundaries around the new developments in the area.
But maybe there is a historical reason, I'd like to know

    Fairview Strand, Trá Baile Bocht.
If you pass Annessly Bridge leaving the city centre and turn left after Centra Fairview then you are on it. It's pretty close to the city centre.
Dunno how to give a direct link in google maps :o

My question is why is this Fairview Strand if the Irish address is Baile Bocht?
I know developers take the piss with placenames (Premier Square, Glasnevin :D) but Dublin City Council put up signs so it must be legit.

In Ireland, many if not most placenames are derived from the original Irish name. What happened here? Snobbery a la Ballymun Avenue turning into Glasnevin Avenue? Or maybe there is a good reason, I don't know

It used to be beside the sea, hence the 'Strand' bit.
There are lots of overlapping places and placenames - I don't think there is anything sinister.

I think it's very sinister. :pac:

I never knew that about Fairview Strand although 'bocht' on it's own means poor doesn't it? Poor town? With an 'a' at the end.

I grew up in the North Strand and know the area well but always (and was positive opening this thread) thought it was Fairview, without questioning it. I never heard the Irish name maybe...

Maybe Ballbough can claim some stake in part of the Fairview Strand but I would certainly be of the opinion that further down, past the turn left for Phillipsburg ave etc, would be the other.

Well if you know the area well you'll know that Baile Bocht is Ballybough. Yes, poor town. It's good to have a interest in Irish and maybe next you are out walking have a look at the Irish name and you can see where it got it's name from.

For example Phoenix Park is Páirc an Fhionn-Uisce so it's do with a spring.
But I'm confused by this one and I am aware that Fairview was once part of the sea.

Btw, it's Phibsbourgh Avenue in Fairview

Wasn't there a leper colony in Ballybough? It's possible the name refers to a fairly exact location and subsequently extended to name a general area.
I should root through 'Mud Island' and see.

No, it's Phillipsburgh. Phibsborough is nowhere near Fairview.

I've always thought Ballybough began at Luke Kelly bridge.
I think Drumcondra begins somewhere down Richmond road.
I think the shell station is in some nomans land between fairview, ballybough & drumcondra :)
address.anpost.ie seems to give fairview strand as fairview.
