I was born in a recession so there was very little activity from the big makers... Pug 405 was about it really!

    M1 was 1978 though!

this is a quote i found

Unfortunately, when the M1 finally launched in 1979, FIA had already revised the rules for Group 5: instead of requiring to complete 400 road cars in 24 months, now it required all these cars must be built before obtaining homologation. That was a massive blow to BMW because it would take 2 more years to do so. The M1 could only attend a few independent races under unfavourable classification. Admittedly, in these races the Group 5 M1 was proved to be unreliable and slower than the dominating Porsche 935.

Nearly positive it was 1978 as they did a concept this year to celebrate the 30th anniversary.

I'd like to think that I'm still fairly fresh - Mrs Wishbone thinks so anyway!

I'll hit the big four zero in July!

1985 - a kick-ass year for cars. Actually no it wasn't up to much:

    Toyota Liteace (3rd gen)
    800px-Toyota_Liteace_(third_generation)_(front)%2C_Serdang.jpg

Runners up (no pics for you):
    - Autobianchi/Lancia Y10
    - Renault 5 (2nd gen)
    - Fiat Croma
    - Peugeot 309
    - Honda Civic Shuttle
    - Everybody's favourite Malaysian car/Mitsubishi rehash, the Proton Saga

Be warned regarding the dates on Wikipedia pages - if they were written by yanks they use silly "model years", or they're just wrong anyway.

Don't mean to go off topic, but that generation of 323 continued production until 2003 in South Africa!

That doesn't surprise me at all, what with their VW Citi Golf and probably a few other gems from the past. They still make the Mk. IV Fiesta down there too - but only in pickup form (the Ford Bantam)!

Best of what I could find - VW Passat was also launched in 73 but the according to the article the first 2002 turbos rolled off the production line.

    Great Thread

Only the most important Ford ever built, and a very obscure Alfa, among others.
