Travelling across continental Europe France , Belgium and Germany last week I was amazed that the fuel prices there did not appear to have risen as sharply as they have in our neck of the woods . I noticed that Europe always had dearer fuel than Ireland between 20 and 30 cent a litre more, over the last 3 years as a lot of European countries collected tax on fuel usage.
Now that we are the same price or more expensive than main land Europe is this proof of profiteering by Irish retailers in preparation for the CO2 tax changes in July.

In the UK the price is up around 1.17p a litre, that works out around 1.50c/litre. A year ago it was around the 99p mark. So we are not the most expensive.

I agree and your £1.50 is only because today's exchange rate. Six months ago it would have worked out at around £1.70:eek:

Lets hope they invent an everyday production car that runs on air! Although they would tax us on that!

I don't know about the rest of Europe but VAT is very high here and will close the gap on other countries

Rememember the major difference in Diesel vs Petrol in Ireland is because of the eejit Min for Environuts, Johnny Gormless, blunders in setting up the new VRT changes that favor Diesel engines. The Petrol companies are taking advantage of the switch to diesel

There is a three month gap between the European comparisons with the Irish. In February, the Irish averages were 116.9c / 117.5c for Petrol/Diesel respectively.

In February for example in France, the average Diesel price was 117.6, similar to here. I was in France last week and cheapest I found was at a supermarket at 138.9, and the dearest on motorway a good bit more.

The rise in prices is effecting the whole of Europe, and there has been much in the way of protests from Truckers/Fishermen etc from all over Europe.

The good news is that oil prices have slipped back slightly due to economic concerns, however we are unlikely to see world fuel prices come down by much ever again.
