Well its that time of year again Festivals are going to be happening all over the county I think they are getting tired now They are basically the same and it seems to be an excuse for people to get out of there brains on drink and start fights with all and sundry Now don't get me wrong I enjoy a good night out and a drink. I also think the ones that go on for a week are to long I know my local one (Burtonport) is. A long weekend would be fine even some of the publicans in the area reckon that the midweek of the festival is a waste of the licence extensions and they could be better used at other times of the year. Thoughts please

I think most of the festivals have lost the older crowds. They seem to be populated by drunken, aggressive youths who see it as a licence to raise hell. Up until a few years back (5-10?) you used to get families, auld fellas and all sorts. Now they all seem to be 16-25, stocious drunk and there's a nasty vibe in the air. I've all but stopped going to them.

Got to agree with you though lots of guys in there mid to late twenties seem to be involved so not all of the trouble is caused by youths but your right part of the problem for me is to many people go out with the intention of getting blind drunk then they say they had a great time how can they when they can't remember what happened

kinda agree was at the rory gallagher fest and there was a queer tension in the air i dunno but it took the edge off the night the music was mind blowing though and and it was one of the best org festivals iv been at so far will have to go again next year

Know what you mean when I go out to my local festival or any others I want to be able to enjoy the music without having to watch my back

I'd think with the exception of specialist festivals such as the Rory Gallagher one, festivals are really becoming a thing of the past.

Insurance, getting a good programme etc are all becoming harder and getting volunteers seems impossible.

Rural areas still work away at it but as Pat Nora Gallagher once said, the likes of Letterkenny seems to have a festival every weekend as such.

For larger towns to revive their festivals they really need to start small and specialist again I think, aiming more at the community.

Interesting that the Rock and Roll festival that was grant aided etc just dissappeared for no reason, as I had heard at the time it was planned to develop it into a large rock festival with international acts but those involved seemed to drop it.

Slaps myself on the wrist with a "get back on topic" roar.

The festivals appeals have dropped dramatically over the last few years mostly Im sure for the reasons given above.

But I do miss the wee local festivals that would have just run for the weekends in some of the smaller towns and villages.

people are working and working different hours + bills are huge so more people are doing double shifts so people dont seem to be available or have much nrg as well there are more cheap flights to places that are more ''interesting''(??) so people seem to see local fests as what we did when we were poor and there was nothing to do etc (i and many more dont hold this view)but it was results of a survey done at second level lately (i feel second level do an awful lot of hard work that doesnt get much credit)sorry staying on topic-in short there seems to be a preception thing over the poor oul local festival

interesting thread fair by the way- play to ye
