Try any of the Christopher Brookmyre books. You can pick one in Chapters for 6 euro. They are excellent holiday read. Or get a Carl Hiaasen Omnibus, 3 books in one, very funny guy.

Thanks for the suggestions all. Chris Brookmyre and Cormac McCarthy sound very interesting so I might grab one of each of them. Cheers!

The Road is nearly a short story. Its 200 pages of fairly big print, ull get trough it quick enough. I wasnt crazy about it, maybe there was too much hype about it before I read it, Ive been stung once or twice by Oprahs book club. Think Ill stay away from her suggestions. But then I didnt like the alchamist either, so maybe its personal taste.

    How about:

The Kite Runner (just started his second, A Thousand Splendid Suns' and I am loving it after 30 pages!)
    The Book Thief
We Need to Talk About Kevin

I see that you like Michael Palin, have you ever read Bill Bryson? he writes the most amazing travelogues, he would actually have me laughing out loud at times!

The World According to Garp by John Irving.

I would second The Kite Runner, but its far from a book to be read on holidays.

+1, my absolute favourite author. Have to recommend 'A Widow for One Year' and 'The Cider House Rules' too.

Very true. I'm reading "A thousand splendid suns" at the moment, it is as good if not better. Even worse choice for a holiday read.

I would reccommend Shantaram by G.D. Roberts though. Very good read, and it will last as its about 900 pages long.

This might sound a bit deep but have you ever read "War And Peace" by Tolstoy? It can be tough going at the beginning trying to get to grips with the characters but it's a very rewarding read I think. It will keep you going for quite a while as well!:)

Anything by Michael Chabon will have you excited enough to read everything else he has ever written.
