Alternative to a winch

Looking for an alternative to a mounted winch to tow me 4x4 out of a hole or pull a boat up the slipway. I have a nissan terrano and dont agree with bull bars so I'm looking for something I can mount on the inside of the jeep as a just in case (High lift jack isnt an option because jacking points are so far under the jeep).
The last time I had to get out of a hole I had to use a ratchet strap which took a long time but worked.

Fantastic machines; not fast, but utterly reliable and can be used from all sorts of angles, unlike a mounted winch.

I've only ever used the bigger 3200kg lifting/5000kg pulling versions (this sort of thing- http://www.liftingsafety.co.uk/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=187), but they're perfectly capable of hauling a dead Land-Rover 110 (2+ tonnes) up a 1:1 slope.
