Why is it boy racing more popular in the country side?

I was asked this the other day and I immediately came out with an excuse about the rural area being boring and stuff, which in fairness is a **** answer. However I know its popular in urban areas like dollymount and in industrial parks in the cities, but why actually does it appear to have a bigger following in country places and bog lands???

    :)

I think its a certain mentality rather than a set of circumstances, although they certainly contribute.

Per capita, I would think they are more prevalent outside cities, as cars are more neccessity than luxury.

Also I resent the Boglands comments good sir.

Boy racing is stupid, and IQs are pretty low down here in the bog.

Its a necessity as theres no public transport to speak of, also they dont have as much to do so they invest the money they earn in their cars.

if we go round robbing our neighbours cars for joyriding wed have a long walk to do first so we just buy our own and make them look like they were robbed:D

seriously though, when every time you want to go somewhere in the country its not just a matter of getting a bus or train your car means freedom. So generally when you townies are spending your confirmation money on fags, Aslan cds, tracksuits and baseball caps we're buying cars.
Also us culchies often get to high enough speeds where we might need aerodynamic body kits (usually put them on a punto or fiesta though:D) rather than just sitting in traffic or keeping to the 50KPH speed limit!

With the decline of the Community Games and the rise in childhood obesity, boy racing has declined to the point of near extinction.

boy racing.... most of the ametuors do it for the kick , the decent drivers do it for the laugh and good drivers do it because they can.

them boggers do it because there insured under there daddys policy and can afford all the crapp RWD cars they like.

That sounds like the opening sequence to The Fast and the Furious 3 - 'Tallaght Diffin'

ah yes it appears to be the good ol necessity to get around. Every boy racer I meets talks about the sense of freedom, so I guess you are right. But why they go mad and do doughnuts and risk their lives, I don't know why? Is it a rebellion against something??? who knows!! all i know is obviously road safety ads do not work!!

Seeing as there is no public transport in rural Ireland, car ownership is pretty much a must. More cars equals more boy racers.
And it's easier to get away with speeding on country roads at night than tooling down Dorset Street at 90mph. Gardai are fixated on the main roads at rush hour for speeding. Only visit the back roads for breath testing.
Basically, they do it because they can.

The difference is down the country the young lads mess around in cars that they actually own.

Also country cars generally have teh powah under the bonnet rather than hanging off the underside/front bumper/still in halfords.

The advantages of a rural address when getting an insurance quote is also fantastic.

I'm a car fan, worse again I own a Civic, and the video in that thread is witness to the most boring, untalented, waste of RWD Corollas I've ever seen. Doughnut after doughnut after doughnut. Talk about only knowing one trick... it's as f'ing boring as watching my Bosch Exxel 1200 Express washing machine in action.

No not at all.... though if you go up the dublin mountins, every evening theres a about 100 boy racers up there and 10 write offs.... but its generally good for business and nobody Yet has been hurt though there insurance company isnt happy...

    Won't hear me Complain

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 41 chele

so what goes on in the dublin mountains, that has 100 boy racers heading up there each evening? must be good enough to pull a crowd afterall and to have the insurance companies worrying. :D

Drugs are as big an issue in rural areas as it is in the cities.

Most young lads in the country start driving early and tend to be more into cars than city kids, as they usually have a greater need for them, getting to town(s) to socialise, going to football matches etc.

In the seventies and eighties every farm boy (please excuse the phrase) was running around in a tarted up Escort or similar from the time he was seventeen. Usually because his auld fella had it insured for nothing through FBD, who wouldn't insure anything within 10 miles of a city.

    Its quite simple really

they can get away with it. and they have somewhere to do it.

In dub there isn't a road without traffic lights on it and the roads are usually clogged with traffic

this isnt the case the many back roads in the country.

    Also:
The communities in rural areas are often fairly close knit, and a lot of them have relatives or friends that are Garda that can get them off the hook so to speak

my friend got caught over taking 8 cars in one go. was told he was getting 4 penalty points (2+2). rang a relative of his that happens to be a garda, was the last he ever heard of it.

That kind of familiarization just doesn't exist in Dublin.
Its also easier to hide hi powered cars in the country that havn't been vrt'd

I went to have a look at a few evo 5's down the country a few months ago when i was buying, and not one of them had Tax, Insurance or NCT.

And when I asked them about it the response usually was "ah we get away with down here ya know lad?"
