Today I got Fianna Fáil's Economic Policy, Eucharistic Congress and Vietnam done. On Friday I got Sinn Féin's Rise to power, Cultural Nationalism and the Strike and Lockout done.

I never do that much history...I think I'm sick.

I did my project on the Republican Congress/Saor Eire....two socialist and anti-fascist Republican groups in 1930s Ireland.

Apparently its easy-peasy to pick up great marks on your project.

    Dear Santa,

    Sinn Fein 1918
    Strike And Lockout
    Hitler/Mussi.
    -Vietnam(a nice, general one too)

    Danke.

sinn féin 1918 please please please... then would love the eec from 1973-1992, and parnell, and vietnam. lovely.

if it was the strike and lockout, nuclear deterrance, the moon landing and cumann na ngaedheal/fianna fáil i think i'd cry...

Can somebody please if you've a minute, break Parnell down into a few bullet points? I don't mean to sound lazy, I just think he's so VAST i want to know what people would focus on.

    For instance:
    *Early political career
    *The New Departure
    *
    *

for one. Just a few points like that, in some form of order.
When I even think of studying Parnell, my head feels ready to explode.

Ok, I'll give it a go, for revision

    Parnell and the Land movement
*Early Career- parents being anglo-irish, but anti english, getting elected, joining the obstructionists
*Getting into the New Departure- seeing he needed support, but hesitative to get involved, deciding to do it, Irish town meeting, Westport Meeting
*Early LL Years- Deavitt founding the LL, parnell as president, going to America fundraising, getting leadership of the HR party (1880?)
*The Land War- his attitude to violence, angry speeches, boycott
*The 1881 Land Act- what it was, what he thought, "test the act", getting arrested
*Kilmanheim Treaty- what it was, Phoenix park murders, changing the LL to the HR League("the overthrow of a movement, the enthronement of a man"
*Conclusion- he was only in it for the power, but he did a load of stuff:p

    Parnell and HR
    *Early Years, as above
*Land League- quick summary, how it got him support
*Building up a "party of steel"
    *1885/1886 Elections
*Flying the Hawarden kite- the HR Bill
    *Pigott forgeries
    *Divorce Scandal, fall from power
*Conclusion- "brought HR from a vague aspiration to the forefront of practical Irish politics"etc

Whew. I also do Parnells Stregths and weaknesses, or Parnell compared with Butt:D Love Parnell, what a ledge

Has anybody seen the section in the exam papers where they show you all the possible areas from each topic, and then tell you whether or not these relate to Society, Culture or Politics?

Our last day in history, our teacher showed it to us and said that in the exam they have to cover at least two of these from each book - which mean that you'd be covered (in each book) if you chose two aspects to study (eg Society and Culture) and leave out the other one.

Just wondering if anyone else heard this and whether or not they're going with it? I'm relying on this for my studying plans because this way it seems like i can completely leave out huge sections and still be able to do well....

Yea, we got the syllabus there a couple of weeks ago, i'm concentration on social/economic for Ireland2, political for Ireland1 and just doing what i can for Europe:(

  • Registered Users Posts: 36 shelly818

Anyone know if H+M Church state relations, Stalin, treaty/civil war, eucharistic congress, lemass/50's, EEC or RTE are gonna come up i have a good idea of them all.

    :D:)

Fuascailt, thanks a million for a fantastic post.

Actually know all of that. When you strip it down and look at it as a series of bullet points say, it's absolutely fine. He just seems so vast and difficult, in reality he's not.

I would take a question on the lockout/larkin and connolly a lot quicker myself, out of personal interest more than anything else.

Ideally, I'll get questions on say 1910-16 on both Irish Topics, one of the dictators, and a handy 'Nam question. God of the Leaving Cert, if you're listening- please edit the paper accordingly.

I'd have a good look at Parnell though, he used to come up every second year on the old course.

    Revised over Parnell today.

Found myself wishing that he did resign after the Phoenix Park murders. I wouldnt have 4 "summarized" pages of notes if he did.

    His life yep yep!!!!

I need to do something fast

i dunno about stalin, he's come up the last two years, as has the nazi state.

im learning parnell, cultural nationalism, and the whole socialism/lockout business.

church state relations, propaganda/nuremberg, and mussolinis rise to power/regime

then the early soverinety and partition stuff; rise of sinn fein, war of indo, treaty, lead to civil war, and the civil war

vietnam im sure will come up, its a much broader question, i have about 5 contexts on it and only 1 contexts for the others.

cant wait for it, im excited yet terrified.

next 24 hours should be fun.

Pretty worried for this, could go really well or could go absolutely terribly. I'm hoping I'll have that beautiful moment of relief where you open up the exam paper and see stuff you're well prepared for. Like when I saw an Coras Slainte on the Irish paper, my god that was good.

its a special martin luther anniversary this year so im guessing the montgomery bus boycott will come up!!

its an anniversary for the holcaust aswell so im assuming something on goebells, propaganda and the nuremberg rallies will appear.

hoping for a personality question on parnell

cultural nationalism would be nice too but i dont know!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 30 In/Casino/Out

To all the people guessing based on special anniversaries and stuff, the History paper just does not work like that. The guy who writes the papers is an absolute prick with no regard for what students think will come up. My teacher says many famous anniversaries have been ignored before.

You're talking about a guy who once put on a question about Siegfried Sassoon's war poetry back in the day.

So although that stuff may well come up, keep yourself covered!

    What I'm hoping for:

    Ireland - Sovereignty and Partition
Sinn Fein and the 1918 election (I don't think the rising will come up as a question on its own, so this is the closest I think we'll get to it.)
Treaty negotiations. (As a tip, Sean Delap in Leeson Street said to study questions based around "to what extent where the aims of the Irish delegates achieved" and "to what extent did the Treaty Negotiations cause civil war. And no, I'm not a Leeson Street student, before someone says something.)

    Movements for Reform
Home Rule Party (Butt -> Parnell -> Redmond)
Land Reform (1870 -> Wyndham Land Act 1904, for bonus info, the last land act was the Hogan Land Act 1922, throw that in there for the craic)
    Cultural Nationalism would be beautiful.

    Dictatorship and Democracy
Hitler or Stalin. That's all I've done. I know I'm pushing it, but I'm pretty sure one of the two will come up and at this stage I don't know if I can learn anything else. Maybe I could do a question on Britain between the wars.

    American Case Studies
I was told to learn all three so that's what I've done. If Vietnam comes up, I'll be delighted. If it does I doubt it will be a question on anything from the time period before the Tet Offensive. If Montgomery comes up, so be it. MLK is interesting enough I suppose. Moon Landing would be decent either, just learn its relevancy to the Cold War.

hey i know this is alot to ask the night before history, but can someone put up a quick summary of the Eucharistic congress, just bullet points on the heading of each paragraph. i've already done one draft but its fairly crap. Thanks!!:D

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,957 ✭✭✭The Volt

Whats a likely question for the 40 mark one if
    a. the boycott comes up
    and
    b. Vietnam comes up?

Also I'm literally banking on these to come up.

Hitler, Nazi Control of Church & State
    Vichy France

    Eucharistic Congress
    1918 Elections

    GAA
    Lockout

Anything other than that I'm fooked :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 360 ✭✭d93c2inhxfok4y

I feel prepared for Sovereignty and Partition, Dictatorship and Democracy, and USA and the Wider World.

For Movements for Reform though, I've only done Parnell, Butt, Redmond and the 1885/86 elections.

Could anyone give me any sort of bullet point summary of cultural nationalism or/and the lockout?

It would be such a massive help!

If Home Rule, and something on 1916 to the civil war doesnt come up ill probably die a little inside

I've learnt Mussolini/Hitler/Stalin; Home Rule Movement/the Land Question; Vietnam/Montogmery/The Moon Landings (but not as well as the other 2); and then for the last topic I hope it's the growth of Sinn Fein because even though I've revised the other stuff, it won't stick in my head!
