Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Heading to San Fran for the summer and I'm going to pick up a credit card just in case I get in a spot of bother and can't get hold of any cash. I don't even plan to use the credit card, it'll just be a safety net for me.

I'm looking at the CLICK Visa card and the mc2 Student MasterCard both from AIB. Which is more appropriate (or can you suggest another credit card)? The mc2 seems to have a lower currency conversion fee. Also, will I have to pay the €30 Stamp duty even if I don't end up using the card?

Any other general advice on how to manage money over there would be appreciated, thanks!

The stamp duty is paid per year - so yes, you will have to pay it, even if you don't use the card.

That's what all ye student say ;)

I think you might have a better chance getting a student credit card TBH. AFAIK you have to be in full time employment to get a Click card.

I have over €10,000 in my current account, surely that should make me eligible for the CLICK credit card?

I was declined for a Click card even though I had my account with AIB for about 8 years, was in full time employment with a competitor bank and had the exact same facility with Halifax (which I was closing to come back to AIB). How in ever not taking that crap I appealed and got it in the end. What i'm saying to you is that you would have a better chance getting a student credit card than a click card. I had a student credit card years ago and I can't remember it being that difficult to get TBH and by the time of got rid of it I had a 3k limit and no full time job ;)

And BTW why have you 10k in a current account! :o Saving account TBH!

The Mastercard seems to make sense, I'm gonna take a trip to the bank tomorrow because I can't apply through online banking at the moment for some reason.

With regards to taking money out in the U.S., will using an ATM give me the lowest fee? I have heard that it's the way to go but a second opinion would be much appreciated.

So I can get to it easily when in the states, I'll throw what's left back into a savings account when I'm back.
