NDP: Graduate Skills Conversion Program (sticky suggestion)
Options
-
06-06-2008 6:07pmI want to suggest a sticky for the NDP's "Graduate Skills Conversion Program" to improve awareness of it. There are some great courses sponsored at a low cost of around €1,750 per annum this year I think.
Links to the courses covered can be found here & here.
Courses may have changed, but it is worth investigation if one is thinking of re-skilling.
The courses sponsored in the last academic year were:

Cheers for the update UCDPerson.
I've been trying to find a link to the Masters in Water & Environmental Engineering in UCD but can't find it in any of the departments courses. You don't have a link by chance?
I'd like to see some more maths specific courses on this list such as actuarial science, Quants and just plain old Maths. It might encourage people to improve in this area.0 -

I don't have any connections with this course so have no suggestions other than the usual search etc, although I suspect it did not run last year, but I am not sure about that.I'd like to see some more maths specific courses on this list such as actuarial science, Quants and just plain old Maths. It might encourage people to improve in this area.
As I understand it, the Skills programme presently supports IT, but not quant skills as such, even though the latter are also needed in the Irish economy.
The closest courses in the UCD context to maths would be things like Computational Science or Business Analytics which contain both programming and maths.0 -
Stickied while it's current then so!0

Hi,
DCU has some new ones too that are just awaiting PAC codes to be activated (but for those interested in applying just PM me!)
M.Sc. in Computational Science and Complex Systems (see: http://www.computing.dcu.ie/prospective/postgraduate/mcscs/index.html)
and there is now part-time delivery of both the M.Sc. in Security and Forensic Computing (http://www.computing.dcu.ie/prospective/postgraduate/forensic/index.html) and the M.Sc. in Software Engineering (http://www.computing.dcu.ie/prospective/postgraduate/softeng/index.html)
These websites are being up-dated so if you want any info on any of these, as mentioned, just PM me.

I applied to such a course in Cork, the Msc. Photonics.
Apparently there wasn't enough interest...
That was pretty much my only course.
Can't do Mathsphysics in UCD, apparently there's not enough interest there either!!!
To be honest it could be too late for me to be applying to other places now.
And the P.A.C, is absolutely pointless imo, I pay about E35 for them to take my envelope, check that it has everything and then forward it!!
E35 per institution....Well i only want one type of course, so to apply to four desired courses, one per university, it costs me E140?.......What a rip-off....I didn't actually do that btw, for that exact reason.0 -
Unstickying!0

I'm doing the MEng in Telecommunications in DCU and there are
loads in my class. :cool:0 -
Given the current climate is there any indication if funding for this scheme will be continued?0

Hi
I'm a manufacturing engineer with 3yrs experience, unfortunately the company I was working for shut its doors last november. I've been trying to find something since and got to a few second round interviews but i'm being told I lost out to someone with more experience. There are a lot of guys out there in the same boat in the manufacturing industry so competition is high.
So basically I have been thinking of doing a graduate conversion course into IT or Accounting based on media reports that these are areas where there are shortages but from reading posts on this website over the last few days (recent graduates etc), it doesn't exactly inspire me with confidence.
So i'm confused, 1) upskill and keep trying in manufacturing or 2) bite the bullet and do a grad. dip. in computing or similar. any advice??0 -

I have heard allot about acc people in the big 4 not being guarenteed work after graduate programs. I am not certain if this would be the way to go. Do you enjoy engineering, for instance out of your choice of careers would you stay there?0 -
Hi Darren101
I wouldn't mind either profession to be honest. Anything with problem solving and figures suits me. You hear about IT grads and Accounting grads being in demand but there are plenty of people in the Graduate forums expressing how difficult it is to find work (and some of these have some serious qualifications) id like to stick with engineering but the longer your out of work....0 -

I am doing CAMME (Computer Aided mechanical and manufacturing engineering) in DCU. It is more towards newer technologies and research. IMO Manufacturing is on the way out hence my choice of this. With the government pushing research, seems like it would be reasonable choice (Also with the bologna process in engineering it will eventually be necessary). Business informatics seems like an area that is expanding and keeping with the research theme, Computation science seems to be growing in industry. People are finding work in alsorts of areas from CFD (Aerospace), banking, pharma etc...
Personally I would say do whatever keeps your interest, while keeping an eye on employability. If you enjoy it you are more likely to succeed.0 -

From interview experience there seems to be a lot of emphasis on project managment/Lean manufacturing/six sigma stuff.0 -
For me this course is ideal. I am a Design Engineer and pushing towards research. I am not interested in manufacturing (I particularly am not interested in QA, too boring IMO). Maybe the PM course in Trinity (I hear it is good), may be an idea?I had a look at DCU's website to see the CAMME course, its similar to UL's -- M. Tech in Computer Aided Enterprise Performance Modelling--- which would be closest college to me. I already have B.Eng in Manufacturing Eng and tbh neither of these courses are different enough to warrant going back to college for. Having said that, there would be some good skills picked up on this course.
From interview experience there seems to be a lot of emphasis on project managment/Lean manufacturing/six sigma stuff.0 -
For those unemployed over 6 months (like myself sadly) Social Welfare may offer up to €1000 towards a part-time course provided you can show you are still available for work and attend periodic reviews. Fees are now €2,000 I believe. Am looking at one of the courses in DCU and one in UCD.
Hope this helps.0 -

Interesting. Can you provide a link to somewhere with more details? Would the individual be entitled to any weekly social welfare?
Found it.Check Previous Study
If you already hold a third level undergraduate qualification, you can only apply for a BTEA to take an equivalent undergraduate course in very exceptional cases. You should contact your local social welfare office to discuss your eligibility before completing an application form.
You are not eligible to apply for the BTEA if you already hold a postgraduate qualification.
PaymentMy social welfare payment is one of the following:
* Jobseeker's Allowance
* Jobseeker's Benefit
* Farm Assist
If you qualify for the BTEA, your payment will be equivalent to the maximum standard rate of Jobseeker's Benefit.0 -

The Graduate Skills Conversion Programme (GSCP) is a joint initiative with the Department of Education and Science and the Higher Education Authority, in response to the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) skills needs, identified by the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs and the mid-term evaluation of the ATS programme. It is funded under the National Development Plan.
The aim of the programme is to provide graduates with the opportunity to acquire qualifications for employment in the ICT area. A composite fee applies to all courses under the programme. For 2009-10 the fee is €2,000.
Further information on these courses can be obtained by contacting the individual institutions administering the courses listed (please click on above link).

If you do one part-time it's 2K per year.0 -
Does anyone know if these courses will be funded again this year? Or where to get a definitive answer?
I contacted one of the colleges but they said they haven't been told any differently yet. The HEA website http://www.hea.ie/en/skills+funding mentions they are under review but no clue as to when a decision will be made.0 -
