    Digiweb instaled the broadband.

Is that a statement or question.
More than likely you wont get free webspace from digiweb in this case as you really arent a customer on Digiweb Satellite service, the NCTE (Dept of Education) are, the ISPs just provide a means for the Dept to supply you with broadband. you have 2 options as I see it. I could be wrong but watty would best answer that.

    1) Host it uself within the schools connection, you will obviously need to talk to HEAnet bout this
2)Apply and purchase webspace from any provider (digiweb etc.......)

Why would number 2 not be an option? You could get a basic hosting package for €20 year.

If you are lookng for free hosting google is your friend

Self Hosting is silly even on regular BB. Not really an option on Satellite.

You are not a Digiweb subscriber. They are a wholesale supplier to the Schools project.

    Options are:
    1) Heanet hosting?
    2) Ring and ask Digiweb explaining you are on Schools Project (no idea if that will result in any discount.)
    3) Regular Irish hosting (Digiweb, Blacknight, Hosting365) account. From under €20 a year!
    4) Cheaper USA account (siteground etc) but much much slower especially for Irish Users.

Avoid free hosting unless for a few images/files for friends. Stupid for a proper web site. In this case "free" is too cheap.

Get a domain name and renew it forever. If you EVER register a domain and let it lapse it WILL be taken by spammer types and all links/googles will lead to horrid adverts.

A lot of schools have http://home.eircom.net/~whatever as their hoster.

    Will try those

    thanks again watty

Probabily just because someone has eircom at home. I still have eircom webspace from maybe 8 years ago. I have to find a friend's eircom connection to be able to edit my own web site there. So not a smart idea for a School.

    See:
    http://homepage.eircom.net/~watty/

I haven't been able to update it for ages as the Web based and FTP logons don't work if you are not connected via eircom. The last time I used analogue dialup modem on my Digiweb Metro Digital Broadband's modem VOIP phone port.

Of course I don't update my "real" websites very much either...
    Examples:
    http://www.wattystuff.net/wattystuff.htm
    http://www.irishwattystuff.com/

The school should register a domain.

    Example for Salesian College, Palliskenry
    Old Site http://www.iol.ie/~copsewd/

    New Site:
    http://www.salesiancollege.ie/home.htm

With a Domain you can change where the site is hosted and the address stays the same.

It costs little to do it properly.

Not for what you want. No.

a .net or .com isn't expensive, .eu and .org a bit more and .ie the most expensive, but still inexpensive comparred to a year's basic homebroadband. Often as part of a hosting deal you'll get a good price on a .ie domain.

Make sure that the school has the contact details and ownership to renew the domain if you go off to do something else.

Barnicles - Have you spoken to the NCTE about it yet?

You'd be better of getting some hosting account and then getting a domain, looks better and makes things easier if you move hoisting providers, take wattys advice imho :)

For example I have cabaal.org and other domains and have moved webhosts about 4 times since 1999 but nobody notices any difference as its still cabaal.org

If the school is a registered charity, they would be entitled to a free .ie domain name for life -> http://www.iedr.ie/CharityRegs.php
