Could anyone tell me how to successfully take a cutting from a Field maple Acer campestre to give to someone to plant. As much information as possible would be appreciated.

I've managed to get some cuttings from varagated populars in the past, not sure about Acers...
If the field maple is mature enough to produce seed they can easily grow from seed..

Thanks for the reply. Someone told me that seedlings at the base of the tree can be potted and grown on. I've had a look and there are seedlings at the base but these are literally all over the garden and I'm constantly having to weed them. Here are some pictures, the first two being the tree and foliage respectively and the latter two being the seedlings:

    Are they Field Maple seedlings?

Them seedlings look like common Ash to me... Keep pulling these as they're a major pest in a domestic garden...

I'm presuming the leaves on the left are just falen leaves from the maple rather than seedlings...??

There is some info on its propagation here...

I've taken the following photographs - one from the front and one from the rear - of what appears to be a sapling. I'm almost sure that it isn't a branch.

Could someone possibly explain how to transfer this into a pot to give to someone to plant elsewhere?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi..
Its hard to tell but I wonder if that isnt a sucker coming up from the root of the tree..
If you want to move it I'd wait another few weeks until its completly dormant.
Cut it back to about 14inches, take a spade and carefully excavate around the base and see ifts a sucker or sapling. If its a sucker forget it I dont think it'll seperate..
If its a sapling just lift as much root as is possible and plant it into a decent pot, water and stand outside in a sheltered spot.. all going well it will come into life next spring...
I've lifted a number of saplings this way with near 100% success, once they're dormant they are quite robust..

There must be something special about this tree as you can buy field maple quicks very cheaply this time of year and pot them up to give out in the spring..
    Cheers
