03 Audi A4 triptronic gearbox problem

    Hi Guys

    I have mate that needs there gearbox fixed on the car in the title.

    Occasionally they are losing reverse gear.

    I reckon the box needs replacing. they live out in the Lusk area. does anyone know of a good mechanic that will be able to fix this issue for a fair price?

    How much are they looking at for the part in question and are they available 2nd hand?

    Main dealer will crucify them so its not really an option.

    Might it be worth having the transmission fluid & filter changed first? I've heard that Audi ATs, while theoretically 'sealed for life' in reality need regular fluid changes.

    I was also looking for a good Audi independent in Dublin, but there doens't appear to be one.

    Best option would be to get a good mechanic on recommendation. A main dealer will be very expensive for that type of job and would only be interested in replacing with a new gear box if that's what's needed.

    It won't be easy to source a second hand box as there aren't too many automatic A4s around. May be best to try the UK. There are some Audi specialist breakers on the web.

    A lot of the cars from the trade, inc main dealers, with auto trans faults end up with AutoTranz in Greenhills. They repair rather than replace complete units.
